On Computers:

I have been around computers for over 11 years. I understand them, and they like me. I can learn something new on a computer almost immediately, and can figure things out similarly. I started with DOS and Windows 3.1, this was a major factor in being versatile and being able to stretch myself to get things done. I remember the days when I was not allowed on a computer, I was too young and didn't know how to do anything. I watched my brother figure things out, at which time I was figuring things out. Then I could only get on the computer when I asked first, and it would be rare. Eventually I was drawing things in Paintbrush and Kid Pix (at which time I learned patience... this computer was a 25MGHz, 2MB RAM, 60MB HD, and only had a 3žin. floppy drive. I had not even learned of the internet; no, that was years later.

I explored the computer setting by setting, program by program, file by file. I learned in this way for years to come, when I was also learning how to use the newer computers at the library (Win95's). I had a glimpse of the internet at my fingertips, but I knew the Web not. It wasn't until after 1997 that I got on the internet for various things, I even got an e-mail account! (at age 11 this was stupendus!) My sister and I shared the account (she was 8), we did many things, I can't even remember what we wasted our time on at the library except for being in chatrooms... oh man, I wasted hours in chatrooms sometimes. It was the Geocities chatrooms, ya know, before Yahoo! took over. Anyway, I continued to use my time learning about computers, especially the hardware at this point, for I was finding the software to be limited at this time (60MB goes fast!).

In 1999 it was a momentus year. My parents got a new computer, I got a website, I was learning new things. I quickly understood and grasped the Win98SE OS, especially after all the library computer use. I learned HTML from my brother and started making a very simple website. It was for Anime, initially for Dragonball Z. I was using a good portion of my free time making webpages and doing graphics and such.

I had felt like I had done everything, except one of my friends's friend was telling us about hacking. The idea intrigued me greatly. But I didn't bother to touch it immediately. Then, years later, I started getting into it as my ability to maintain my website seemed annoying. I got a copy of The Guide to Mostly Harmless Hacking, things were starting to line up and make sense. I felt like I was getting some kind of supernatural power that only few could possess. Like a Super Saiyan, Jedi, or something. But something didn't sound right, I had never heard of UNIX really. I felt I needed to get a shell account, but I knew that it wouldn't happen. I went to the internet relay chat that was on that site's server, irc.happyhacker.org to find more info. fr0st and L3THAL helped me out, they told me the basic ways I could figure out hacking and everything. They each pointed me to Linux, so I went to Linux.

Now, Linux is a UNIX look-alike by Linus Torvalds (back in 1990?) so people could get a free UNIX OS -- think what you will, but this kinda sounds shady to me. Anyway, I learned what Linux was, but I knew I could not just install it on my dad's computer... so I started looking for a computer. Thankfully, my brother pointed me to the CMU surplus sale (see link to the right). I bought a computer, and I got some burnable CDs so I could go to the library and download some Linux OSs of my choice. My computer I bought was *way* too slow, that is, until I got to Morphix Lite GUI. I extended my computer's abilities to their limits as I could.

Eventually, over half a year later, I got linux. I gotta tell ya, I like DOS and Windows more. Windows' is much more efficient in the way that it handles software and hardware.... but it kinda only got that way because of its popularity. Several things to look at in their differences:
    1) Linux and UNIX have immediate support for muliple users, whereas DOS hasn't always.
    2) Windows has more compatible hardware (thanks to the customers for putting the money in their pockets earlier on)
    3) There is much more professional software made for windows; that is, software without major bugs.
    4) Windows is easy to learn ... Mac is even easier. Linux and UNIX are both insane to the point where it isn't very efficient.
    5) The best games are for Windows.
    6) I don't care if Microsoft has all the money, I only care that they provide computers for a low price with very well done software. I want to use the computer, I don't want the computer to use me/my time/my energy to do even simple things.
    7) Linux is for the people that don't want to be known as n00bs (programmers, insecurists, and other people that hate the concept of someone being a 'n00b'), people that are broke, people that want insanely (psychotically) complex networks, and people that are just plain anti-social.
    8) Mac is for people that think they are artistic. Or for heavy-duty audio/visual crap.

Anyway, after I explored the linux scene, I came back to the hacking realm with a new perspective. I am not a hacker, I am a white-hat-hacker if anything. But I am not going to harm any one elses' stuph, in fact, I will help those that want to learn from being manipulated by the actually malicious people. I have six computers in my room right now. Albeit they are not all connected to monitors, the network, etc. But at this time I have my main computer, the network is up, and I enjoy my internet friends a lot. They give me insight and encouragement.

I do PowerPoint slides for my church's worship service, I took a programming class this spring semester (2005), I maintain my computer to prime, and I have been tech support (at one time or another) for all of my friends (and some acquaintances). I play tetris, and am very good at it (I have gotten negative scores!). I hang in a forum or so, you can find me at the roperboard, my name is bump_in_the_night and/or my_2cents. You can find me in the Happy Hacker IRC sometimes, my name is overDOSe. You might not want to be there, though.... unless you know these things:
1) Whose IP address is 127.0.0.1
2) How to not ask about hacking into school computers or anything related to the validity of The Matrix, Hackers, or any other movie with hacking in it.
3) How to use a computer.
4) How to NOT trust people, and how to NOT be socially engineered.

To this day, I maintain my website to fit my newer lifestyle -- God, people, and my ideals. This is my 5th website. I believe that this one is the best. The first was an anime site (varying from Dragonball Z to Sailormoon to Gundam Wing, and more), the second a simple anime site (megaman), the third a free website/graphics service (I never had one customer under that service, ever.), the fourth a newer version of the first under different hosting, and the fifth one for stating things on my mind.

Before you reply, don't think all of this is fact. Windows is better in *my* eyes, but not someone I might know with a beard and suspenders -- he might like UNIX. I will leave with a few links to help you on your way.
