On Cheating and Fairness:
The world is ruled by the aggressive use of force. If some small person decides to sneak up on me and nail me in the head with some heavy object, I will probably not hit back for a long time. Lets say this person is 1/2 my size so he cannot have beaten me fairly. But when it all comes down I am the one who is in the hospital. the way around this in not complaining about how little people keep ambushing me with end tables but to simply pay attention and next time some one tries to smack me upside the head with a piece of furnisher turn around and take it from him.
On the flip side If say a country of small people armed with explosives strapped to there bodies decides to begin to slay innocent Americans it might be a good idea to bomb there country into the stone age with our superior force. Before they find enough nuke material to put a dirty bomb in Atlanta. Now there is NOTHING fair about killing terrorists with a F-114 they cant even see! the dumb thing much less hit it with there little rifles. However, I will not call using a F-114 or even night vision goggles to kill terrorists cheating. I want those people dead before they murder my family. Not after.
So how far can this scale down? Am I advocating cheating at any game I come accost? Be it life love war or go fish? Well that depends on the situation all is fair in love and war. I think life fits in with those as well. However go fish is not so serious. For go fish I would have to say it depends on what the group playing wants. Some friends and I had fun cheating at lire (a card game) in church van on the way back from a youth rally. And it turns out I am not the best cheater as I and those who collaborated with me lost soundly. Cheating was definitely a good thing here.
When playing in a chess tournament cheating is probably not an option for two reasons (1) chess players are very touchy about there game and may murder you on the way home and (2) it’s a s!erious game a real competition is going on and ruining it is a shame. So there is a time and a place for cheating. And a time and a place for playing by the rules. But the most important thing is not cheating or not cheating its how you treat the people you play with. After losing to a cheater to you decry him to the world or quietly decline the join the next game? After winning by cheating to you admit that you have cheated and take consequences? The important thing after all is not the game but the people you play it with.
