linguistic flows and backward flows in the country of the Turkmens, IFRI -INALCO, University of Teheran, May 2001
The matter of my article is to illustrate the various currents of languages which crossed Turkmenistan and to try to define linguistic contours of the tomorrow Turkmenistan, as well as the geopolitical or economic interests which result from this. I will thus see various flows or axes which bring to their passage (and their disappearance) a new cultural dimension to the country.(text in French).
La haine de soi (hate of one's self),under the direction of E. benbassa and J-C. Attias, editions Complexe, Paris, 2000

Social movments in the today's muslim world: crossed views, Université de Lausanne, Switzerland, December 1999
The identity building up process does not fit with the same sociological parameters in different contexts, like Western Europe, North America or Turkey. This text explains how the association and militant movements in Turkey might move away social associations from the civil society. (text in French).
Workshop "The words of the city", French Institute for Anatolian Studies, Istanbul, Turkey, October 1999.
The architecture, urbanism, sociology, history or other academic fields are various keys to enter the quarter of a city and analyse it. Beside those fields, I focus in this article on an identity quarter through linguistic and speech studies. In fact, our researches lead us in the quarter of Yildiz, in the district of Besiktas in Istanbul, and we point out how a belonging to the same way of speech may be a first step for being part of a community, recognise it, and be recognised by it. (in French)
Je, toi, lui, nozigs, vous, eux et les autres, ( I, you, that guy, we, them and the others), Istanbul Observatory Centre, June 1999
The way of talking to the others means more than a simple exchange. In Turcic languages, one may use personal pronouns, body language, nouns of parents or "sweet" adjectives to establish a connection with someone else. The choice and the use of the selected terms immediately underline the belonging to a religious group or to a social class. This paper illustrates by a gender studies approach how the way of speaking to people can include or exclude a citizen of the Turkish society if he(she) is considered as marginal. This article is in French.
The New Young Turks: Gays, Magazine Aktüel, no. 399, March 1999.
With a socio-historical approach, this paper demonstrates how in a decade, Turkish Gay Pride went out from clandestine world to a shy assertion into the Turkish society. The Gay visibility is now on the Turkish screen and movies. But is this a real acceptance as a sign of "European modernity" or is it just a fashion flash which will put again Turkish Gays in darkness by powerful religious groups or police forces? (In French and in Turkish).
Turks in figures and percentages, Istanbul Observatory centre, January 1999.
The Turkish press has a crush for editing of figures and numbers in order to classify people according to a given percentage. This ethnological paper gives information on the usage of figures in Turkish cultural, hygienic, cooking, sentimental or economical way of life, underlining the differences between the Turks and the Europeans. May we analyse and scan an entire population just through figures, and percentages? This article answers to this question. (In French).
The development and the emergence of an identity based on sexual relevance in Muslim countries, International Meeting of the MESA, organised by the University of Arizona in Chicago, December 1998.
Act of the MESA (Middle East Studies Association of America), this paper explores, within the perspective of gender studies how some young elements of Turkish society have emerged in civil society, searching a better insertion into a world wide movement in order to transcend Turkish cultural borders to belong to a more Western society, in order to be able to carry a message of liberation. The paper explores the ways how the western way of life might be (or not) adapted to the Turkish society. (In English).
Price of green in Istanbul, Observatory centre, July 1998.
Since 1996, the urban authorities of Istanbul under the religious party Refah, have launched a campaign to introduce more than one million trees in the City for the five next years. But the trees planting has a price, and the society in charge of this project is connected to fundamentalist Muslim movements. The paper illustrates how these programs are not economically realisable. (In French).
The word as identity sign: Case of marginal minorities in Turkey," Conference at the IFEA, Istanbul, May 1998.
To protect themselves from the police and religious aggression, transvestites, gays, prostitutes and dresscrossing people have build and developed a slang, whose roots go back to the Ottoman Empire. This paper shows the way of construction of the speak of sexual minorities, and its resistance to the Turkish Republic. What is the future for such a speak, in a society where the semiotic signs are now more physical than linguistic ? Is the importation of the western gay of life to Turkey leading to the end of a secular slang?. (Paper in French).
The end of a Nightingale, Istanbul Observatory Centre, March 1998.
Safiye Ayla has been without doubt the symbol of the first years of the Turkish Republic. Friend of Atatürk, she has been for more than 30 years the voice of Turkey. She past away forgotten by everybody. (In French)
A new key to enter the EEC, magazine Aktüel n° 334, Istanbul, December 1997.
Turkey tries to find out all kind of possibilities to enter the EEC as full right member. Among the Turkish citizens, the Gays are probably the top of the iceberg, by adopting European standards in their everyday lives. In a way, the paper expands how the Turkish Gays are the most western styled of the Turkish society and probably the most well prepared for the enter of their country into the European Union. (In French).
Survivors of the Bridge, Istanbul Observatory Centre, October 1997.
The Bridges over the Bosphorus are often used as a diving board for people who attempt suicide. From the sad lover to the ruined business man, many who pass through a nervous breakdown or a burnout come to the Istanbul bridges... (In French).
The railway as a solution the traffic jams in Istanbul, Istanbul Observatory Centre, June 1997.
In the face the endless increasing traffic jams in Istanbul, the most crowded city of Europe, the railway seems to be the best solution to bring a solution to the traffic situation in Istanbul. (In French).

The Russians in Istanbul, Turcica, Tome 28, Paris, 1996
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the reopening of East European borders, many East Europeans have fled to Istanbul so as to try their fortune, turning old city areas into huge flea market, and giving birth to a new wealthy business class of Turkish tradesmen originating from textile and food sectors. This article is focused on the new Russian speaking community, which means one million two thousand yearly entries in Turkey and an influx of two billion dollars into the Turkish economy. Besides economic mutations, the "shop tourist" trip to the Bosphorus banks brought about deep social changes in Russia and in Turkey. This paper has been updated in July 1999.
The cultural policy of the new independant Turkmenistan, La lettre de l'Asie centrale, Paris, July 1996.
In this three monthly published newsletter, created by a group of French researchers of the EHESS (High School for Social Sciences), the article focuses on how the Turkmen government gives priority to a strong co-operation with the UE countries, as well as with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the gap, each day more wide, with the former power Russia. (In French).
New Turkmen Alphabet, Central Asia Observatory Centre, Istanbul, September 1995.
In this newsletter dedicated to the changes in the former Ussr, the paper focuses on the changing of the alphabet of Turkmenistan. By the abandonment of the Russian alphabet for a Turkish inspired new one, the government of the country made the decision of turning towards Turkey and the European Union, and establishing distance with Russia. In this sense, the paper demonstrates how the choice of an alphabet is more that a simple writting choice. (In French).
