[+] inuki [+]

inuki was the dog spirit of yuzuriha nekoi, the youngest of the dragons of the heavens.
the wolf is the family guardian spirit of the nekoi family, and since her name nekoi means
cat, the name was just a camouflage name to protect the family. inuki and yuzuriha had
grown up together ever since they could remember, and their bond between each other
was extremely strong.

inuki could change into anything at yuzuriha's will, but she generally gets him to transform
into a sword when she fights. she herself is from the mitsumine temple, and lived there
with her grandmother until she was sent to tokyo with inuki to join the final battle of the
earth.

[flash back]
yuzuriha: grandma! it's not fair! everyone calls me a liar. they say that they can't see
inuki, even though he's right here! they all say that i'm lying.
grandmother: it's all right, dear. inuki is right by your side. but other people cannot see
him.
yuzuriha: why not? why can't they see him? why am i the only one who know's he's
there?
grandmother: that's because inuki belongs to you alone, a dog that will share your life
with you.
yuzuriha: other kids don't have one?
grandmother: no. the power is yours alone.
yuzuriha: but i don't want a power! i want you to make it so that everyone can see him!
grandmother: i can't do that, because with that power comes your destiny. you are one
of the stars who will decide the fate of the earth.
[current time]
yuzuriha: and that's how it's always been inuki. no one can see you. but i'm sure that the
people i'm about to meet at the diet building, they can see you! grandma said that they
will be my friends. and i bet they'll pet you and hug you! maybe i won't have to be
lonely if i can just meet someone who can see you. you never know inuki, i might even
fall in love with that person.
kusanagi: nice dog. he's an odd one, but a fine dog.
yuzuriha: you see him! someone who can see my inuki...

as you can see from this extract, inuki can only be seen by the ones who are involved
in the final battle, which of course includes that dragons of both earth and heaven. and
it was kusanagi who was the first of them to see inuki. and after that, yuzuriha did fall in
love with him, but their story is still going on.

inuki was killed in book 13 while he protected yuzuriha from satuki's onslaught. satsuki
had asked yuzuriha "why shouldn't we kill human?". yuzuriha, too caught up in trying to
find a reason as to why not, did not see the oncoming cables that were about to rip her
apart. nevertheless, inuki jumped in front of her in time, but was only to die afterwards.
he, after being stabbed, limped towards yuzuriha, licked her falling tears, and as she
held onto him, inuki faded away and disappeared.

his loyalty towards yuzuriha, and the girl's anguish is what makes inuki's death touching.
and, as the story goes on, it is kusanagi who saves her from satsuki (even though he is
a dragon of the earth).

however, in book 15, inuki is revived! well, in a way. caught in between on of kamui's
fuuma's battles, yuzuriha was helpless as she watched kamui being put in so much pain.
the moment where kamui is crying out, yuzuriha, not able to bear watching it anymore,
screamed out to the sky. suddenly, a light beam came out of her chest, and as it
formed itself into a ball, it went in between fuuma and kamui. then, it took itself into a
shape, a cute little puppy. fuuma then disappeared, and the little dog trotted towards the
girl, licked her face, and she held onto it tightly. she was reunited with her dog spirit, and
being yuzuriha, named it inuki.

so i guess inuki did not really die, but he did, in a way. i hope that made some sense.
