The actual score was Florida State 23, Texas A&M 14.
Chris Weinke and a few of the other players on the field in Giants Stadium may have been suffering from opening game jitters, but there were no such problems for our top prognosticators. Veteran forecaster Kurt Siefken had the best Kickoff Classic predixn, his 24 - 13 pick differing from the actual score by only 1.41 points. Major Phil, an old player with a new nom de guerre, claimed the runner-up spot with a difference of 3.16. Third and fourth also went to PrediXn Derby vets, J.P. (3.61) and Herb Wills (4.00). There was a pile up in the fifth position, as Matt Pierce, Dr. Bierhanzl, Rik Bain, and Frank Brown each came within 4.12 points of the actual score.
College football being what it is, I'm happy when my predixn is less than 10.00 from the actual score. (This means that most weeks I'm not very happy.) But in this, the opening game of the season, no less than two dozen of our fine forecasters called the score within 10.00 points. Professional journalists should do so well:
PICKER FOR PAY PREDIXN DIFFER =============================================== ============== ====== John Nogoswki (Tallahassee Democrat) FSU 28, A&M 13 5.10 Richard Rosenblatt (Associated Press) FSU 41, A&M 14 18.00
We may be looking at a highly competitive season in the PrediXn Derby! So a big thank you is due to all the talented prognosticators who sent in predixns for this game.
The Seminoles won't be playing on September 5, but have a game every Saturday after that starting with their Atlantic Coast Conference opener on September 12, when they sample the hospitality of North Carolina State. Last year in Tallahassee, the Wolfpack put five touchdowns on the board against the Seminoles, more than even the Offensive Genius and his Gators. Unfortunately for N. C. State, the red and black gave up 48 points. This year, Coach O'Cain faces the Seminoles with new starters and a new contract. Got a line on the outcome? E-mail your predixn of the final score to:
Please put something in the subject line like "FSU @ NCSU" so I'll know it's not a message from some farmer defending the Offensive Genius. Send it soon so that it gets to me before kickoff, 3:30 PM EDT on September 12. All predixn that arrive before the deadline will be recorded to be scored and ranked following the outcome of the game. Results (like the ones above) will be posted to alt.sports.football.college.fsu-seminoles, and archived at the PrediXn Derby website, http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Arena/5177/, so that future generations will be able to see just how precognizant you were.
Good luck!
Herb Wills, HWILLS@FREENET.TLH.FL.US
