The Child Alone

A child sits alone day after day. He has no plans or a place to stay.
In being left alone there is no happiness or relief, only sadness and grief.
There are no fancy clothes to wear, just the ones that you will share.
The only toys that are around, are the ones that he has found.
There are no meals with family or friends, this child is left alone for himself to defend.
He eats whatever he can find or steal, for him this is his only meal.
We take for granted what we have or show.
For this child, heartbreak is all he knows.
Whenever you feel lonely or sad, be thankful you're not this little lad.
Think of the many children left all alone.
Who fend for themselves, who live without a home.

What is child neglect?

Child neglect, which is 63% of all substantiated cases of child abuse, is the most common form of child maltreatment reported to child protective services. It is defined as a "type of maltreatment that refers to the failure to provide needed age-appropriate care," such as shelter, food, clothing, education, supervision, medical care and other basic necessities needed for development of physical, intellectual and emotional capacities. Unlike physical and sexual abuse, neglect is usually typified by an ongoing pattern of inadequate care and is readily observed by individuals in close contact with the child. Physicians, nurses, day care personnel, relatives and neighbors are frequently the ones to suspect and report neglected infants, toddlers and preschool children.

The types of neglect:

Physical neglect -- accounts for the majority of cases of maltreatment. The definition includes the refusal of or extreme delay in seeking necessary health care, child abandonment, inadequate supervision, rejection of a child leading to expulsion from the home, and failing to adequately provide for the child's safety and physical and emotional needs. Physical neglect can severely impact a child's development by causing failure to thrive, malnutrition; serious illnesses; physical harm in the form of cuts, bruises and burns due to lack of supervision and a lifetime of low self-esteem.

Educational neglect -- occurs when a child is allowed to engage in chronic truancy, is of mandatory school age but not enrolled in school or receiving needed special educational training. Educational neglect can lead to underachievement in acquiring necessary basic skills, dropping out of school and/or continually disruptive behavior.

Emotional neglect -- includes such actions as chronic or extreme spousal abuse in the child's presence, allowing a child to use drugs or alcohol, refusal or failure to provide needed psychological care, constant belittling and withholding of affection. This pattern of behavior can lead to poor self-image, alcohol or drug abuse, destructive behavior and even suicide. Severe neglect of infants can result in the infant failing to grow and thrive and may even lead to infant death.

Medical neglect -- is the failure to provide appropriate health care for a child although financially able to do so. In some cases, a parent or caretaker will withhold traditional medical care during the practice of religious beliefs. These cases generally do not fall under the definition of medical neglect, however, some states will obtain a court order forcing medical treatment of a child in order to save a child's life or prevent life-threatening injury resulting from the lack of treatment. Medical neglect can result in poor overall health and compounded medical problems.

What is physical abuse?

Physical abuse, which is 19% of all substantiated cases of child abuse, is the most visible form of abuse and may be defined as any act which results in a non-accidental trauma or physical injury. Inflicted physical injury most often represents unreasonable, severe corporal punishment or unjustifiable punishment. This usually happens when a frustrated or angry parent strikes, shakes or throws a child. Physical abuse injuries result from punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning or otherwise harming a child. While any of these injuries can occur accidentally when a child is at play, physical abuse should be suspected if the explanations do not fit the injury or if a pattern of frequency is apparent. The longer the abuse continues, the more serious the injuries to the child and the more difficult it is to eliminate the abusive behavior.

Types of Emotional Abuse:

1] Rejecting -- Parents who lack the ability to bond will often display rejecting behavior toward a child. They tell a child in a variety of ways that he or she is unwanted. They may also tell the child to leave, call him or her names and tell the child he or she is worthless. They may not talk to or hold the young child as he or she grows. The child may become the family scapegoat, being blamed for all the family's problems.

2] Ignoring -- Adults who have had few of their emotional needs met are often unable to respond to the needs of their children. They may not show attachment to the child or provide nurturance. They may show no interest in the child, express affection or even recognize the child's presence. Many times the parent is physically there but emotionally unavailable.

3] Terrorizing -- Parents may single out one child to criticize and punish. They may ridicule him or her for displaying normal emotions and have expectations far beyond his or her normal abilities. The child may be threatened with death, mutilation or abandonment.

4] Isolating -- A parent who abuses a child through isolation may not allow the child to engage in appropriate activities with his or her peers; may keep a baby in his or her room, not exposed to stimulation; or may prevent teenagers from participating in extracurricular activities. Parents may require the child to stay in his or her room from the time school lets out until the next morning, or restrict eating to isolation or seclusion.

5] Corrupting -- Parents permit children to use drugs or alcohol; to watch cruel behavior toward animals; to watch pornographic materials and adult sex acts; or to witness or participate in criminal activities such as stealing, assault, prostitution, gambling, etc.

What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

Fetal alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a leading cause of mental retardation. FAS is a cluster of birth defects that develop in infants of women who consume alcoholic beverages while pregnant. Defects include prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, facial malformations, central nervous system dysfunction and varying degrees of major organ malfunctions. When mothers drink alcohol while pregnant, their babies could have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). FAS and FAE are a group of birth defects that have no cure. People with FAS and FAE have a range of problems as severe as being mentally retarded to less visible problems like difficulty paying attention in school. The diagnosed cases of FAS is estimated to be one to three per 1,000 live births. One in 100 Americans is affected by FAS/FAE. There is no know safe amount of alcohol for a pregnant woman. When a woman drinks, her baby drinks because the alcohol passes directly through the placenta to the baby.

Symptoms of FAS

> Infancy: low birth weight irritability, feeding difficulties, sleep disturbances, alcohol withdrawal, strong startle reflex > Facial malformations: small eye slits, thin upper lip, low nasal ridge, small jaw >Neurological dysfunction: attention deficit, memory deficit, hyperactivity, difficulty with abstract concepts and problem solving >Organ/ body dysfunction: muscle problems, bone and joint problems, genital defects, heart defects, kidney defects > Mental retardation, developmental delays > Behavioral problems > Growth deficiencies > Vision problems > Dental abnormalities > Hearing problems > Epilepsy

What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

When a baby is vigorously shaken, the head moves back and forth. This sudden whiplash motion can cause bleeding inside the head and increased pressure on the brain, causing the brain to pull apart and resulting in injury to the baby. This is known as Shaken Baby Syndrome, and is one of the leading forms of fatal child abuse. A baby's head and neck are susceptible to head trauma because his or her muscles are not fully developed and the brain tissue is exceptionally fragile. Head trauma is the leading cause of disability among abused infants and children.

Shaken Baby Syndrome occurs most frequently in infants younger than six months old, yet can occur up to the age of three. Often there are no obvious outward signs if inside injury, particularly in the head or behind the eyes. In reality, shaking a baby, if only for a few seconds, can injure the baby for life. These injuries can include brain swelling and damage; cerebral palsy; mental retardation; developmental delays; blindness; hearing loss; paralysis and death. When a child is shaken in anger and frustration, the force is multiplied five or 10 times than it would be if the child had simply tripped and fallen.

How does it happen?

Often frustrated parents or other persons responsible for a child's care feel that shaking a baby is a harmless way to make a child stop crying. The number one reason a baby is shaken is because of inconsolable crying. Almost 25 percent of all babies with Shaken Baby Syndrome die. It is estimated that 25-50 percent of parents and caretakers aren't aware of the effects of shaking a baby. What can you do to prevent a tragedy?

If you or someone else shakes a baby, either accidentally or on purpose, call 911 or take the child to the emergency room immediately. Bleeding in side the brain can be treated. Immediate medical attention will save your baby many future problems . . . and possible the baby's life.

The National Exchange Club Foundation is committed to making a difference in the lives of children, families and our communities through its national project, the prevention of child abuse. The NEC Foundation's most successful method of countering abuse is by working directly with parents through the parent aide program. The NEC Foundation coordinates a nationwide network of nearly 100 Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Centers who utilize the parent aide program and provide support to families at-risk for abuse.

In 1979 when members of The National Exchange Club voted to adopt child abuse prevention as their national project. To date, the NEC Foundation and its Exchange Club Centers have helped more than 140,000 children and 100,000 families eliminate child abuse in their daily lives.

The NEC Foundation is endorsed by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and was the winner of a Presidential Award from the White House Office of Private Sector Initiatives. The award recognizes exemplary community outreach and volunteer service projects sponsored by businesses, trade associations, professional societies and other private organizations.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month -- Each year, the NEC Foundation endorses the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The NEC Foundation produces an annual child abuse prevention month kit which includes public awareness project ideas, public relations informtion, promotional materials and community involvement suggestions.

The Abused Child

Listen, listen. Can you hear him cry?
Listen, listen, for I won't tell you a lie.
The parents who make him suffer for loss or gain, show this child nothing only pain.
This abused child that suffers you see, needs help, not from just you or me.
Listen, listen. Can you hear him cry?
Listen, listen, for what I'm saying is no lie.
This child is slapped, kicked, thrown or burned.
Each abusive parent sometimes takes a turn.
Where he lives there is no happiness or relief.
Only the hurt, pain, sadness and grief.
For this child heartbreak is all he knows.
This kind of childhood will follow him where ever he goes.
This child hurts and feels so alone.
All he wants is to live in a happy home.
Listen, listen, for his pain is no lie.
Listen, listen, can you hear him cry?
But someone you say has let this child down.
His bruised face holds nothing but a frown.
Someone should take an upper hand.
Someone should do something you demand!
When will that someone come along,
put the abusive parents where they belong?
Away from this child who hurts night and day.
Find for him a happy home, a loving place to stay.
Listen, listen, do you hear him cry?
Or will nothing be done and he's left in this home to DIE!

We need to help turn this child's tears into HAPPINESS!!!

The Adopted Child

Nothing in my dreams has ever came true,
not until that special day my eyes beheld you.
You were twirling your hair around your index finger,
looking at nothing with thoughts that would linger.
You were standing in a corner all alone,
telling yourself, "No one wants a child half grown."
I needed someone in my life like you,
to make all my dreams come true.
You are what I needed and wanted to have as my child.
A special person, so loving and temper mild.
I can't wait to share our dreams and lives together.
I will always love you now and forever.
You will make my life complete and simple.
By your love, laugh and little dimple.
Come now and let us go home.
To that happy place that's all our own.

Splendor of Love

I've seen rare jewels of perfection,
in their greatest splendor shine.
But I've never seen another that could take the place of mine.
My jewel isn't man made, but the plan that God has laid.
It shines a never ending love He has for me,
that will last throughout eternity.

Daily Walk

Sometimes I walk in the shadow, sometimes in sunlight clear;
but whether in gloom or brightness, the Lord is always near.
Sometimes I walk in the valley, sometimes on the mountain's crest;
but whether on low or high land, the Lord is manifest.
Sometimes I walk in the desert, sometimes in waters cold;
but whether by sands or streamlets, the Lord doth me enfold.
Sometimes I walk in green pastures, sometimes on barren land;
but whether in peace or danger, the Lord holds fast my hand.

The Humble Man

The old man removed his hat in prayer,
wondering what it would be like up there.
Would his family and friends come out to meet him at the gate?
Would they have waited and it been too late?
Some would think they had plenty of time,
their lives seemed great and everything was fine.
No time for smelling the flowers as they grow,
no time for neighbors, no time to slow.
No time for laughing, just wearing those frowns.
No time for helping someone who is down.
The matter of which we come and go,
we can't influence, nor can we control.
We may want our lives to be happy and go in one direction,
but it's not created to always be in perfection.
However it may be, try to cherish each day,
and give thanks to God until your final day.

Twas The Night Before Jesus Came

Twas the night before Jesus came and all through the house,
not a creature was praying, not one in the house.
Their Bibles were lain on the shelf without care,
in hopes that Jesus would not come there.
The children were dressing to crawl into bed,
not once ever keeling or bowing a head.
And mom in her rocker with baby on her lap,
was watching the Late Show while I took a nap.
When out of the East there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my feet to see what was the mater.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash!
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But angels proclaiming that Jesus was here!
With a light like the sun sending forth a bright ray,
I knew in a moment this must be the DAY!
The light of His face made me cover my head,
It was JESUS! - returning - just like He said!
And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth,
I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself.
In the Book of Life which He held in His hand,
was written the name of every saved man.
He spoke not a word as He searched for my name,
When He said, "IT'S NOT HERE!", my head hung in shame.
The people whose names had been written with love,
He gathered to take to His Father above.
With those who were ready, He rose without a sound,
while all the rest were left standing around.
I fell to my knees, but it was too late.
I had waited too long, thus sealed my fate!
I stood and cried as they rose out of sight,
"Oh! if only we had been ready tonight!"

In the words of this poem, the meaning is clear.
THE COMING OF JESUS IS DRAWING NEAR!
There's only ONE life and when comes the LAST call,
We'll find that the Bible WAS TRUE after all!

A Teenager's Prayer

Temptations are knocking, they're outside my door.
Lend me the strength, to keep my feet on the floor.
Don't let me surrender my life for a thrill.
Show me that friendship doesn't come in a pill.
Chase away the people who will hand me a line.
Help me remember that my body is mine.
I don't want to inject and surrender my soul.
Don't want the poison that's smoked in a bowl.
Don't let me jump, cause they say I can fly.
My life's barely begun; I'm not ready to DIE!

Don't let your name be listed as one who threw their life away!

Missing Piece

Your sweet spirit has stolen my heart,
somehow I knew this from the very start.
I felt like I was frozen in time, trapped in glass.
Not knowing my future, afraid of the past.
Had no hopes or any dreams,
life was useless or so it seemed.
Your love has lifted me up to the person I long to be.
To help me reach the dreams in my future, that will be.
I was lonely and lost in deep despair,
Then the Lord sent you, someone who'd care.
You have a special glow around you, like a candle in the night.
When I'm near you, life's struggles turn out right.
Your love for me fits perfectly like the sand meeting the shore.
I have been given the key to love's eternal door.
By the traces of your love, that's when I knew.
The missing piece of my life was you.

From Heaven He Came

He came from Heaven to set us free,
from sin and death and slavery.
A crown of thorns upon His head,
eyes that wept and a heart that bled.
Upon a tree He hung to die,
to give His life for you and I.
What made Him bare the sorrow and loss,
to give Himself and hang upon that cross?
He said,"My child twas not in vain,
the sheeding of blood, the weeping and pain.
All the times I suffered and cried,
it was my love for you, the day I died.!"

Watch and pray, the Lord's return could come today!

Sermons would be better if we listen as a Christian rather than as a critic.
It is easier to leave angry words unspoken, than to mend a heart those words
have broken.
Love never asks how much MUST I do, but how much CAN I do.

Only a change of heart can banish sin from one's life.
People should be able to take every word we speak at face value.
The Christian cannot ignore human need or refuse to help the needy.
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged,
and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed
or hidden that will not be made known.
Whoever acknowledges me before men,
I will also acknowledge him before My Father in Heaven.
But whoever disowns Me before men, I will disown him
before my Father in Heaven.

If you cannot lift the load off another's back,
do not walk away. Try to lighten it.
