Chapter 23

Waiting in the path was a black gray squirrel. Like the ones before it, they found a scroll rolled up around its neck. As soon as Chandra had taken it off, he dashed off into the trees.
"So… what is it this time?" asked Kathleen watching Chandra unroll, and read it.
"Uh… it says…that she found Hannah in the woods and Hannah is now resting at the tree." Chandra handed it to Kathleen. Reading herself Kathleen, let out a sigh of relief.
"Good she's safe. I was starting to worry about her. Well I think we can focus harder on our testing now." Chandra agreed and they continued walking leaving each other, to one another's thoughts. Kathleen was sure Chandra noticed it too, but every so often a large shadow would creep across the ground. Every time Kathleen would look up trying to see what it was, she would only catch a glimpse of something passing over the high treetops. Kathleen was staring upward when Chandra put her hand over Kathleen's mouth and threw her to the side off the path. Chandra laid down flat hidden behind the grass; she steadied her breathing and closed her eyes. Kathleen knew to be quiet and steadied her breathing as well, she heard something a quiet whisper; Chandra was mumbling don't find us. Kathleen looked over the tips of the tall grass lining the path, that they were hidden behind and saw two animal forms coming down the path. The girls waited as the figures came into sight, as soon as they had Kathleen looked over the grass tips again and saw a pair of large wolves. Both stopped and rested, one was black with almost a dry brushed look of red and the other was so gray it looked blue.
"They couldn't have gone far could they?" asked the black wolf in a deep voice. Chandra and Kathleen's mouth drop open staring at each other in disbelief.
"Maybe we've underestimated them, I can't wait to meet them in person." Replied the blue one as it scratched his ear with its hind foot. The black one arched up stretching with a yawn, the wolves rested a while then continued down the path. Kathleen waited in silence and watched while another shadow past over the ground, Chandra stared off into space her face twisted in thought. A good five minutes had past, and Kathleen looked both ways down the path for any sign movement, when she saw nothing she turned to Chandra to talk. Chandra was already busy with something else, she was pulling her map out and studying it Kathleen made her way over to her to get a look at the map herself. Kathleen saw the way they had come and was pretty proud of the ground they had covered. Chandra on the other hand had a different opinion.
"We can't use the path now, I don't want to run into the wolves we have no idea if their friendly or not."
"Like the poem." Said Kathleen agreeing. Who knows they may be hungry, she thought to herself. "There's another one here," Chandra pointed to a place on the map; not that far away from were it said they were, "it doesn't look as nice as this one but I think I can make out a faded word near it," she squinted and stared at the map for awhile, "I think it says 'Stone yard', sounds like the place the clue was talking about."
Kathleen nodded her head and stood up and looked around, ignoring the shadow that passed over the ground again. Chandra glanced at the map before putting it away and led Kathleen into the thick trees on their way to the new trail.
