Chapter 20
"And so the testing begins," said Nova stepping out of the shadows leaning up against her thrown and smiling to the girls. Turning to Alex she whispered, "I trust you placed the papers?" Alex grunted and nodded his head "Yeah it took all night but I did." Nova smiled and turned to the girls throwing pieces of material to the guards she had them place the hoods over the girl's heads. They must be enchanted thought Kathleen. She tried to say something but nothing came out; not even the slightest sound. Their hands were bound and the girls were led outside. "When you awaken," said Nova. Awaken, thought Kathleen what was that supposed to mean! "You will find a parchment with a clue, you must follow the clue and find your item. Once the item is obtained you will be brought back here. Remember girls no one has ever past my tests, but I feel it's the best way to get rid of you without feeling guilty." Something was brought around Kathleen and she heard Nova's muffled words
"To bad I really did like you two, please pass."
That was it; Kathleen didn't remember anything after that (seemed to happen to her a lot) just as soon as it had happened she woke up. Left me in the middle of no where, thought Kathleen, sure there are trees, and squirrels but still… Squirrels? Maybe its one of Ivory's. Kathleen hastily followed the squirrel. She was at a run now but the squirrel always stayed in sight. Oh look thought Kathleen there's another,
"Ouff, Chandra?" Standing right in front of her was Chandra and now that she had a good look at her she saw that the armor seemed like it belonged on her.
"You follow the squirrel too?" breathed Chandra, Kathleen nodded her head, and Chandra smiled. "Well that's good I don't think I would have been able to find you on my own." Both of the squirrels dropped down to the ground next to Chandra and Kathleen. Getting a better look at them Kathleen saw that they had tiny scrolls attached to their necks; Kathleen bent down and untied the note around the squirrel closest to her; Chandra did the same. Both girls read the notes a looked up at each other. "Does yours say to go on with the testing?" asked Chandra.
"Yeah" breathed Kathleen disappointed.
"Dang," said Chandra under her breath "I was hoping that we could just leave, look for Hannah and get out of this crazy place. But hey we got nice outfits" Chandra smiled sharply.
"The clues," said Kathleen snapping her fingers, suddenly remembering. She searched her pockets and found a small envelope, while she opened it Chandra looked for hers. "What," said Kathleen "This is utter nonsense it's not in English it doesn't make any sense!"
"Hold on let me find mine." Said Chandra. From one of her many pockets Chandra pulled out an envelope and tore it open, reading it quickly. "Uh? Any ideas Kathleen?" Kathleen glared at her, "No I just said I didn't get it."
"Oh? Well what do you think it means then?"
"Chandra? Want me to teach you something?" said Kathleen holding up her clenched fist.
"You mean your going to teach me what it means?" said Chandra with a smile.
"No I'm going to show you this!" yelled Kathleen and with that she swung her fist at Chandra, missing, as Chandra danced away. Holding up the paper as if looking at it through the light would make it better, Chandra smiled and glared at Kathleen.
"Hold you paper up to the light dear." Said Chandra. Kathleen did watching as if magic words formed on her paper as if someone was writing them and read:
Past the hole gray of the vole
Knock is to knob to find clue two
"Bet you Alex came up with that all by himself," said Chandra with a smirk "As soon as this is over I'm going to the nearest dimension and buying him a book with real poetry." Kathleen laughed and they both sat down and pondered what it could mean. "Maybe we talk to the mole," said Chandra
"It's vole." Kathleen corrected.
"Whatever, we talk to the vole and then knock on his nole? You know why don't we try looking around first before when begin to figure out what it means." Said Chandra tried of coming up with silly ideas.
"Alright," said Kathleen thinking the same thing herself, "lets go." They walked around for a bit looking for a hole in the ground. It was a good idea but then it hit Kathleen. "I got it!" she exclaimed and pulled something out of her pocket.
"My stone disc! Its gray!" said Kathleen holding the disc up that she had gotten from the last night.
"Wow that's amazing it should be one of the worlds greatest wonders! A gray stone! How did they do it! " Chandra said. Kathleen suddenly had the urge to throw the disc at Chandra's head, but thought she'd show her once she figured out the clue. Bringing up the disc Kathleen held it up to the light along with the clue. Chandra wasn't watching she was to busy fishing something out of her many pockets. Nothing, Kathleen would have sighed but quickly held the disc up over her eye and looked through the hole; scanning the ground. She turned around when she heard a muffled laugh.
"What you think you could do better?" said Kathleen turning red but hoped Chandra took it for anger.
"No…" said Chandra softly looking up at Kathleen.
"Thought s-"
"I know I can." Said Chandra cutting Kathleen off. "As a matter if fact I think I've solved it and know exactly were it is."
