Chapter 11
Why was the farmer glaring at the squirrel? Why was the farmer's wife glaring at the squirrel? All these questions floated through Kathleen's mind. Hannah hadn't noticed anything, but Chandra was the first to see the farmer reaching for a knife that had been lying on the table.
"Uh Hannah why don't you go play with the squirrel outside." Chandra quickly said. The farmer kept reaching for his knife but stopped when Hannah left. "You know what I think I'm going to take a walk around outside. Do you want to come Kathleen?"
"Oh yes" Kathleen said catching on "Don't touch anything we'll clean it up when we get back." They both rushed out the door after Hannah. Once out side they searched for the squirrel and Hannah. She wasn't in sight. They moved around to the back, there they found Hannah with the squirrel perched on her shoulder looking into a shed.
"Hannah get away from there." Kathleen whispered not wanting to attract attention. Hannah didn't move Kathleen rushed up to her and looked over her shoulder inside and found what Hannah was paralyzed by. Chandra followed and was the first to comment.
"Please tell me those aren't real"
"They are." Hannah stuttered, "That's what squirrel said" Kathleen couldn't look at it any more she turned away.
"Why" she breathed, "Would you want to keep bones in your shed."
"Those aren't just bone bones," Chandra said.
"There Human bones." Hannah finished wide eyed.
"We still don't know that they put them there. But," Kathleen said meekly, "This would explain why they don't get visitors." They all turned away and slowly walked back to the house. Squirrel stayed outside while they did the dishes like they promised. When they were done the farmer and his wife called them into the living room.
"Sit make your self comfortable," said the farmer in a too cheerful voice. "Well" said the farmer reaching into his pocket pulling out a crystal "I bet you would like to know why we have bones in our shed." He didn't give the girls a chance to answer, "I'll tell you why. We are very special people if that's what you want to call it. We have this special taste" Kathleen didn't like the way he kept using the word special but the farmer went on licking his lips "for all types of people the kind that hold what we need" he held up the crystal rolling it around in his fingers. "We stick what we need into this crystal. It makes us live-" he paused looking everyone over "forever. You lucky three our going to be a part of that." he raised the crystal up once more it started to glow. A flying white streak flew to the farmer's hand grabbing the crystal then dashed out the front door. This was their chance to escape these insane people Hannah, Kathleen and Chandra also dashed out the door. They took off at full speed after the squirrel; who was standing in the yard in front. Sticking the crystal between her teeth the squirrel shattered it. A light flew towards the farmer and the woman (they had also jumped up and ran out side) they hit the ground and turned to ashes.
