(AP) - A Claremont McKenna College psychology professor was convicted Wednesday of falsely reporting her car was vandalized and spray-painted with racist and anti-Semitic slurs while she was speaking at a campus forum on racial tolerance. Kerri Dunn, 39, of Redlands was convicted of one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report and two felony counts of attempted insurance fraud. She faces up to 31/2 years in prison when she is sentenced Sept. 17. Her attorney, Gary S. Lincenberg, issued a statement saying Dunn would appeal the attempted insurance fraud convictions. The professor claimed her car was spray-painted and its tires slashed March 9. The report prompted college officials to cancel classes at Claremont's five undergraduate campuses the next day as thousands of students took part in demonstrations calling for tolerance. Dunn called her insurance company that day to report the vandalism. She became a suspect after two witnesses reported seeing her vandalizing her car. Investigators also said she gave them conflicting reports about what happened. Dunn's attorney said the visiting professor never submitted a claim to her insurance company, adding the judge barred that evidence from being presented to the jury. As for the false police report conviction, a Claremont College electrician identified a man who should have been the primary suspect, Lincenberg said. Dunn, who remains on leave from Claremont McKenna College, maintains her innocence, he said." "Comedian Jackie Mason raised the ire of a controversial Islamic lobby group by calling "the whole Muslim religion" a "murderous organization" that teaches "hate, terrorism and murder." The remarks came when Mason hosted the Jim Bohannon Show, syndicated nationally by the Westwood One radio network. Mason was elaborating on a comment by his co-author, New York lawyer Raoul Felder, who said Islam "is a religion of hate, this is a religion of murder." The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, filed a complaint with the FCC and wants Westwood One to apologize. Mason, according to CAIR, amplified on Felder's "bigotry." "This is amazing information that almost nobody is aware of ... everyone thinks that it's a legitimate religion that preaches love and brotherhood," said Mason. "The truth of the matter is [that terrorists] are reflecting the religion and following the religion."

CAIR took offense to Schlessinger's response to a mother who asked whether her 16-year-old daughter should take part in a Catholic high school class's field trip to a local mosque. The visit was part of a "moral themes" class that aimed to help students learn how "Muslims are treated" in the United States. Schlessinger told the mother she should tell the teacher "you are willing to go to the mosque only if it is one that has done its best to rout out terrorists in its midst." A number of people and organizations are currently working on ways of detecting communications between terrorists on the internet. "Investigation of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 made it clear that terrorist groups are increasingly using the Internet as a communication and propaganda tool where they can safely communicate with their affiliates, coordinate action plans, raise funds, and introduce new supporters into their networks. To combat this rising tide, Israeli researchers are working on ways to make communication more difficult for terrorists. One of the leaders in the field is Ben-Gurion University Professor Mark Last who is conducting breakthrough research on fighting terror in cyberspace at his Software Quality Engineering/Data Mining) Laboratory on the Beersheva campus. In his lab, Last and his team are working towards the goal of achieving the ability to predict future activities and targets by searching Web pages, e-mails and other on-line data. His lab at Ben Gurion University (BGU) is working to develop and implement a prototype system for detection of terrorist-related or other criminal activities characterized by abnormal patterns of information access and use on the Internet. Last outlined his research during a recent conference on cyberterror he organized with BGU and which was supported by the Fulbright Foundation, Tel Aviv University, and the U.S. government's National Institute of Systems Test and Productivity in Tampa, Florida.
