is said to be harmful. Music is accused of leading the young astray. It is on the stand for influencing young people all over the world and at all times to immoral behaviour. It has been said of Mozart to Elvis that they were evil, that the music they made was evil. Why? Who has said so? Why has it been said? I have no good answer. I can guess, I can imagine, but I cannot say for sure. I can, for example, guess that is was the fact that the adults couldn't understand the "new" music. I can say for sure that new and unknown things frighten people. I know they frighten me, so why would they, the parents of the fans and opposers of, for instance, Elvis, have felt otherwise? But I still can't understand precisely why. I mean my mother is not young, she's not old but she was born in the 40:ies, and she isn't afraid of the, at times admittedly horrible, sounds that come from my little brother's room. She quite enjoys some of it even, because she has taken the time to listen to it. Really listen to it. And not just because she has to on account of the volume my brother plays his Metallica, Sepultura and what-not's at, but that she herself inserts one of his records in the CD-player in his room and turns the volume up so that she can listen to it while making dinner in the kitchen. She might not like all of it, I know I don't, but she takes the time to really listen and come to know why she does or does not like it. I have also seen her look in the CD jacket at the lyrics, so she knows that they are NOT all about disemboweling people or the Devil or alcohol or drugs. On the off chance there is a Metallica-hating parent reading this: "Have you stopped to listen to what the lyrics are about or thought about why your kid is listening to the music at all?" And most importantly: "Have you asked or just brushed it off as stupidity, or something equally silly? And if you are an Elvis fan, you Mr or Mrs Metallica-hater, what did your parents think about that?" Oh, it doesn't have to be particularily a Metallica-hating parent, it could be any band that you don't like but your kid does. And kids, if any of you don't want your parents to listen to or like the music you like or bother you about it: I don't see why. 97-03-03 ![]() ![]() ![]() |
