The actual score was the University of Florida 32, Florida State 29.

Paul Barkowitz, a PrediXn Derby regular, took top honors this week by correctly calling the upset. His 35-25 predixn was only 5.00 off the actual score. Lee Banks (6.32), "openboxrs" (?) (10.30), and Bob Laffen (12.04) also called the upset, taking second through fourth respectively. Neil Whiteman (-3.16) didn't call the winner correctly, but came close enough to the final score to take fifth. It was this season's second trip to the top five for both Barkowitz and Laffen.

In short, it was a stunningly unexpected outcome for nearly everyone. The half dozen or so journalists whose predixns I surveyed would have scored about a -20.00, and even "Gator Bait" only allowed Florida a chance if the game developed into a low-scoring defensive struggle. The Offensive Genius fooled them all.

That concludes the 1997 regular season of Seminole football, and the Seminole Football PrediXn Derby goes into mothballs as well. If there's any interest I'll crank it up again for the bowl game, otherwise look for the Derby again when FSU opens the 1998 football campaign. Thank you to everyone who played this season; that includes two-time champs like "Beachnole" as well as perennial bottom-dwellers like myself. You're what makes this fun, and I hope you're all back for next season.
