PROVINCES AND STATES

Brazilian Provinces and States in the period 1871 - 1945 included : (Except Amazonas and Paraná, which were only created provinces in 1850 and 1854, all others were original provinces of the Empire of Brazil since 1822. They all became states of the new Brazilian Republic in 1889 (1)) Alagoas Amazonas Bahia Ceará Espírito Santo Goiás Maranhão Mato Grosso Minas Gerais Pará Paraíba Paraná Pernambuco Piauí Rio Grande do Norte Rio Grande do Sul Rio de Janeiro Santa Catarina São Paulo Sergipe (1) The imperial provinces were dependent of the Ministry the Affairs of the Empire. They enjoyed a certain degree of selfgovernment. The States were selfgoverning except for the years 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when direct rule by the central government was imposed. ____________________________________________________________________________

TERRITORIES

Brazilian Territories in the period 1871 - 1945 included : (the territories were dependent of the Ministry of Justice and of Home Affairs) Acre since 1903 / 1921 (2) Amapá since 1943 (3) Fernando de Noronha since 1942 (4) Guaporé since 1943 Iguaçu since 1943 Ponta Porã since 1943 Rio Branco since 1943 (2) Acre became part of Brazil in 1903, but was only organized as a territory in 1921. (3) Five territories were created in 1943 in order to secure some frontier regions. (4) Fernando de Noronha had already been under central authority from 1877 to 1891
