BRAZILIAN STATE OF MATO GROSSO

In 1889 Mato Grosso became an original State of the Brazilian Republic. It was selfgoverning except for the periods 1917 - 1918, 1930 - 1935, 1937 and 1937 -1945, when the central government imposed direct rule. In 1943 western parts of the state were detached to form the new federal territory of Guaporé, while at the same time some southern lands were detached to form the short living territory of Ponta Porã (1943 - 1946) __________________________________________________________________________________
