PARÁ

BRAZILIAN PROVINCE OF PARÁ

The Brazilian capitania of Pará was established in 1737, when the western parts of the capitania of Maranhão were detached. In 1751 it became the Estado do Grão Pará, which, for some time, included most of Northern Brazil. (1) After the proclamation of the independence of Brazil in 1822 it became one of the original provinces of the Empire (styled Grão Pará in some sources until 1850 when the western parts were detached, becoming the new province of Amazonas) (1) In 1772 the eastern parts became the separate capitanias of Maranhão and Piauí. __________________________________________________________________________________
