BRAZILIAN PROVINCE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL

In 1807 the most southern frontier region of the capitania of Rio de Janeiro became the separate capitania of São Pedro no Rio Grande do Sul of Portuguese Brazil. It became a province of the Empire of Brazil in 1822. Rio Grande do Sul was briefly independent from 1836 to 1845. __________________________________________________________________________________

BRAZILIAN STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL

In 1889 Rio Grande do Sul became an original state of the Brazilian Republic. It was selfgoverning, except for the periods 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when the central government imposed direct rule. __________________________________________________________________________________

José Antônio Correia Câmara pending the installation of a new president. The same day, Júlio Prates de Castilhos, candidate of the Partido Republicano, proclaimed himself president (2x) at Porto Alegre. His rule lasted only one day. Also the same day his electoral opponent Gen. João Nunes da Silva Tavares "Jaco Tavares" (Barão de Itaqui, l. 1816 - 1906) of the Partido Federalista proclaimed himself acting president at Bagé, where he remained in power until Jul 04 1892. When Prates de Castilhos again became president in 1893 (3x), Jaco Tavares revolted, hereby initiating a civil war which would soon afterwards evolve into a general revolt against the Brazilian central government, the so- called Revolta Federalista, which lasted until 1895.
