It was inspired by the revolutionary events of early 1848 in Europe and started in Nov 1848 when the liberal president of Pernambuco Antonio Pinto Chichorro de Gama was deposed by the imperial government. The revolutionaries - led by Joaquim Nunes Machado (1809 - 1849), Antônio Borges da Fonseca (1808 - 1864) and Capt. Pedro Ivo Veloso da Silveira (1... - 1852) - at first had some success, forcing president Herculano Ferreira Penna to leave office. But in early 1849 his successor Manoel Vieira Tosta defeated them, some groups continuing however the struggle until the surrender of Veloso da Silveira in 1850.

BRAZILIAN STATE OF PERNAMBUCO

In 1889 Pernambuco became an original state of the new Brazilian Republic. It was selfgoverning, except for the periods 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when the central government imposed direct rule. (3) (3) The island of Fernando de Noronha was once again part of the state from 1891 to 1942, when it again became a separate territory. __________________________________________________________________________________
