BRAZILIAN STATE OF SANTA CATARINA

In 1889 Santa Catarina became an original Estado (State) of the Brazilian Republic. It was selfgoverning except for the years 1892, 1894, 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when the central government imposed direct rule. (1) (1) Contestado "Contestado" was the name given to the contested region situated between the two states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. It was a poor country and - as a consequence of the contestation - without much formal government until the proclamation of the Republic. Like the Bahian sertão it had become a place of activities for mystics, who trough healing and preaching, gained many followers. The first of them, João Maria (active ca 1844 - 1870) had still been mainly concerned with religious affairs, but the second, João Maria de Jesus (real name : Atanás Marcaf - active 1893 - 1908) already payed more attention to political affairs, the start of his activities being linked to the Revolta Federalista. The third mystic to appear in the Contestado was José Maria de Santo Agostinho (real name : Miguel Lucena Boaventura) who, in 1911, from his "Holy City" of Santa Maria at Taquaruçu, started preaching against the Republic, the "Empire of Evil" and the cause of all problems. His killing in 1912 didn't stop his followers who, the following year proclaimed a "Heavenly Kingdom" and started a Holy War against the Republic. The Kingdom, whose territory - or rather zone of military operations - included the whole western part of the State of Santa Catarina and some southern parts of the State of Paraná, lasted till 1915 when the Holy City was taken by republican forces, some bands continuing however to fight until 1917. Leaders of the Movement after 1912 (all were young visionars, acting as spokesperson for José Maria until his expected return) 1913 - 1914 Teodora° 1902 - 1914 Manoel 1896 - 1914 Joaquim 1903 - 1914 - 19.. Maria Rosa° As to the contested territory, it was divided between the two states in 1916, the largest part going to Santa Catarina. In 1943 - 1946 some western parts of the state were part of the short living federal territory of Iguaçu __________________________________________________________________________________
