BRAZILIAN STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE

In 1889 Rio Grande do Norte became an original state of the Brazilian Republic. It was selfgoverning except for the periods 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when the central government imposed direct rule. In 1935 its capital Natal was briefly the center of a Communist revolt : Nov 23 : Start of the Communist revolt in Natal. Several government buildings were occupied. The legal authorities toke refuge in the Italian consulate. Nov 25 : The insurgents formed a Popular Revolutionary Committee (Comitê Popular Revolucionário), intended to be a provisional government of all Brazil.
