The Portuguese capitania of Rio Grande do Norte was established in 1597. It became
an original province of the Empire of Brazil in 1822.

BRAZILIAN STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
In 1889 Rio Grande do Norte became an original state of the Brazilian Republic.
It was selfgoverning except for the periods 1930 - 1935 and 1937 - 1946 when the
central government imposed direct rule.
In 1935 its capital Natal was briefly the center of a Communist revolt :
Nov 23 : Start of the Communist revolt in Natal. Several government buildings were
occupied. The legal authorities toke refuge in the Italian consulate.
Nov 25 : The insurgents formed a Popular Revolutionary Committee (Comitê Popular
Revolucionário), intended to be a provisional government of all Brazil.
