  1. lame duck      跛腳鴨

    2. 喻指：殘廢的人；破產者；落選議員；政治生命即將結束的人；不能再競選連任的總統。

    【例句】：

    People, like animals, are cruel to lame ducks, ready to drive them out.  Their eyes are already turned toward the new leader.

    人和其他動物一樣，對跛腳鴨是無情的，隨時想把牠們驅離。他們的眼睛早已轉向新領導人了。

    When stocks falls suddenly, there are many lame ducks.

    股票突然大跌，很多人破產了。
  2. laugh in one's sleeve       從袖中笑

    3. 是指人用手掩著嘴巴笑。喻指：暗自發笑，竊笑；暗中高興。

    【例句】：

    I supposed after I had agreed to the bargain, he went away laughing in his sleeve.

    我想我同意這筆交易後，他暗自高興地離開了。
  3. lead by the nose       牽著鼻子走

    4. 原先是指將農舍的牲畜穿上鼻環，再用繩子套在鼻環上拉著走的。喻指：完全掌控；使別人聽命於己。

    【例句】：

    She leads her husband by the nose.

    她完全控制著她丈夫。
  4. leap in the dark       在黑暗中跳

    5. 喻指：輕舉妄動；不加考慮鹵莽從事。

    【例句】：

    It will be a leap in the dark to go into partnership with them; we know so little about them.

    我們對他們很不了解，所以跟他們合伙將是輕率之舉。
  5. let the cat out of the bag       讓貓從袋子裏出來

    6. 喻指：洩密。

    【例句】：

    Even though the spy was caught and put to the torture, he would still not let the cat out of the bag.

    即使被捕而且被拷問，那位間諜仍不肯洩露秘密。
  6. let sleeping dogs lie       讓睡覺的狗躺著

    7. 喻指：別找麻煩，莫惹是非。

    【例句】：

    She let sleeping dogs lie though she knew what was going on in Frank's family.

    8. 即「有其父必有其子」。

    【例句】：

    James is as smart as his father.  Like father, like son.

    【例句】：

    It's not a joke, so you'd better look before you leap.

  9. loaves and fishes       麵包和魚

    10. 源出【聖經•馬太福音】耶穌用一些餅和一點魚給許許多多的人吃飽了。那些跟隨著祂走的人群，並不是要聽祂的教誨，而是為了滿足他們自己饑餓的肚子，故以此喻指：私利；實惠；物質利益。

    【例句】：

    Some men seek office, not to be useful to the country, but for the loaves and fishes.

    有些人尋求公職，不是為了使自己有益於國家，而是為了物質利益。
  10. lose face       丟臉

即失面子，失去威望。

【例句】：

Mind your behavior.  Don't lose my face.

注意你的行為，別讓我丟臉。
