-Nagini: Voldemort's basilisk.

Horcruxes.
Etim. "Naga" is snake in Sanskrit.
-Nearly Headless Nick: Gryffindor ghost. Killed in
1492 with a blunt axe, so although he isn't completely beheaded, his neck is
almost entirely gone. His real name is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington.
-N.E.W.T.s: Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests. Taken at the
end of the seventh year, on the subjects each student chose to keep studying
after their O.W.L.s. For certain jobs in the wizarding world you need a certain
amount of approved N.E.W.T.s or an approved N.E.W.T. in certain subjects; for
example, to be an Auror you need at least five N.E.W.T.s, graded Exceeds
Expectations or above.
-Nimbus: A series of racing brooms, the
fastest before the Firebolt. Harry used to own the Nimbus 2000 until the wind
flew it away and it got smashed by the Whomping Willow.
Etim. "Nimbus" means "cloud."
Nimbus was also a god in Greek Mythology.
-Norris, Mrs.: Filch's cat.
Etim. A character in one of J.K.
Rowling's favorite author's (Jane Austen) books.
-Nox: Turns out the wandtip light produced by
Lumos.
Etim. Means "night" in Latin.

-Oblansk: Bulgarian Minister of Magic. May be called Obalonsk or another
name; Fudge couldn't remember.
-Occlumency: Closing of the mind to mind-readers
(Legilimens) so they cannot enter your thougts.
Etim. Comes from the Latin words for "hide" and "mind".
-Omnioculars: Magical binoculars. They can slow down and replay action,
among other functions.
-Orchideous: Makes flowers spring outt of the
wandtip.
-Ottery St. Catchpole: town near the Burrow.
-Owls: Used as messengers in the wizarding
world.
-O.W.L.s: Ordinary Wizarding Levels. Exams
taken at the end of students' fifth year. To keep studying a subject after fifth
year you need to have an approving OWL in that subject.

Etim.
Parvati is a Hindu Goddess married to Hindu God
Siva. She gave
birth to a baby boy named Ganesh, who Siva beheaded, but replaced the old head
with an elephant head after Parvati reamed him out. Sister of the Goddess of the
Ganges, Padma.
"Patel" is a common Indian last-name.
-Patronus: Spell that produces a sort of
defensor of the same name against dementors.
-Peasegood, Arnold: Obliviator for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad.
-Peeves: A poltergeist that lives in Hogwarts
Castle.
Etim.
"Peeve" means "little devil" or something that gets on your nerves (like a pet
peeve).
-Pensieve: Bowl where its owner can deposit part of his memory when he
thinks his head is too full of worries and thoughts. Afterwards he and other
people can visit the memories.
-Petrificus Totalus: Body-Bind
charm.
Etim. From Latin petrus (stone) and totalus (total).
-Pettigrew, Peter: A wizard who used to be a friend of the Potters (or so
he said), but betrayed them.
-Pigwidgeon: Ron's small, overexcited owl.
-Poltergeist: Mischevious spirit. Peeves is one.
Etim. "Polter" means noise. "Geist" means spirit.
-Polyjuice Potion: Potion that makes the drinker look like whoever they
want to, but only for some time. The maker needs a piece of whoever they wish to
turn into, such as a hair or a toenail clipping.
-Portkey: object bewitched to transport wizards from one place to another
at a set time.
-Potters: Wizarding family, anti-Voldemort.
Lily and James were both Aurors that escaped Voldemort three times. They were
searched by the Dark Lord and killed. Only Harry survived.
Etim. The Potters were a family Rowling knew when she was a girl,
and she liked their last name.
-Potter, Harry James: The Boy Who Lived.
Voldemort tried to kill him when he was an year old, but he failed and
disappeared. G
-Potter, James: Harry's father. At school he was a troublemaker
with his best friends, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. He could transform into a
stag.
-Potter, Lily: See Lily Evans and
Potters.
