-Leaky Cauldron - Tiny, grubby-looking pub in London: Through its courtyard you get to Diagon Alley. It has a spell cast on it so muggles don't see it, even though it's in plain sight.
-Legilimency: Readind of someone else's mind. Takes great skill to do. Occlumency can block this.
 Etim. Comes from Latin legere, to read, and mens, mind.
-Lestrange, Bellatrix: Death Eater. She's Sirius's cousin. She killed him in OotP. S
 Etim. Bellatrix is a
pale yellow star indicating the left shoulder of the constellation Orion, the Great Hunter. Bellatrix is known as the "Female Warrior."
-Levski: Chaser for Bulgaria.
-Little Hangleton: Tom Riddle Sr's birthplace.

-Lockhart, Gilderoy: Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher in Harry's second year. He attributed many feats to himself that others did.
 
Etim. Gilderoy: A highwayman known for being handsome. May also come from the word "gilded," which is defined as having a pleasing, showy appearance, which covers something of little worth. "Roy" is old Old French for "regal one" or king.
           Lockhart: Town in Australia near Wagga Wagga ("Compose a poem about my defeat of the Wagga Wagga Werewolf"?).
 -Locomotor Mortis: Leg-Locker curse.
 Etim. From Latin mortis, death.

-Longbottoms: A family of Aurors. Alice and Frank were tortured into madness by Bellatrix Lestrange and know live permanently at St. Mungo's. They cannot even recognize their own son..
-Longbottom, Alice: An Auror. Neville's mother.
-Longbottom, Frank: An Auror. Neville's father.
-Longbottom, Neville: An accident-prone but brave boy in Harry's year. Lives with his grandmother. G
 Etim. Old French for "from the new farmland."
-Lovegood, Luna: An odd girl an year younger than Harry. Her father owns The Quibbler. Her mother died when experimenting with charms. R
 
Etim. Luna ia the he Roman goddess of the moon. Also, it is a term for silver in alchemy.
-Lumos: Charm that makes light come out of the wandtip.
-Lupin, Remus John: A werewolf. He was Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Hogwarts in Harry's third year. G
 
Etim. According to the legend,Remus and Romulus were twins raised by a female wolf. Romulus killed Remus after founding Rome.
            Lupin means wolf-like. Canis Lupus is the scientific name for wolf (lupus means wolf in Latin).
-Lynch, Aidan: Keeper for Ireland.

-Madam Malkin
: Squat, smiling witch, owner of a robe shop.
-Madley, Laura: Hogwarts student.

-Malfoys
: A family of rich Death Eaters.
 Etim.
 "Mal foi" means "bad faith" in French. Malfoy has "mal" in it, meaning evil.
-Malfoy, Draco: Son of Lucius Malfoy. One of Harry's enemies. S
 Etim.
Draco is a snake-shaped constellation. In Latin, Draco means "dragon."
-Malfoy, Lucius: Death Eater. S
 
Etim. Lucius is similar to Lucifer (the devil). A Roman General named Lucius Cornelius Sulla was usurped by the people of Rome, but defeated them and seized control as a dictator. After doing so, he removed most of the popular say in the government and returned it to the Senate of Rome, which controlled the people, and founded a firm Republic. (Thanks to Rosemary for this great theory!)
-McGonagall, Minerva: Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts, Deputy Headmistress and Head of Gryffindor House.
 Etim. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom (Atenea in Roman mythology).
-McMillan, Ernie: Prefect in OotP. H
-Metamorphmagus: A witch or wizard who can change part of their appearance at will (hair color, nose, etc.).
-Mockridge, Cuthbert: Head of the Goblin Liaison Office.
-Moody, Alastor (called "Mad-Eye"): Retired Auror. Has a magical eye that can see through things, including the back of his head.
 Etim. Alastor was a
Greek god who sought revenge on people, and a moody person is, well, not in a very good mood.
-Moran: Chaser for Ireland.

-Morsmorde: Used by Death Eaters. Makes the Dark Mark appear in the sky.
-Mostafa Hassan: Egyptian referee at the Quidditch World Cup Final. Also the Chairwizard of the International Association of Quidditch.
-Mudblood: Insult against Muggle-born or half-blood witches and wizards.
-Mullet: Chaser for Ireland.
