-Fat Friar: Hufflepuff ghost
*-Felix Felicis: a
gold-colored potion that makes the drinker lucky until the effects wear off.
However, if taken too often, it causes giddiness recklessness and
overconfidence.
Etim. Felix and Felicis are
two forms of the Latin word for happy, lucky.
-Finnigan,
Seamus: Boy in Harry's year. G
-Figg,
Arabella: An old lady that lives two streets away from the Dudleys. She
loves cats. She's actually a Squib that, by
Dumbledore's orders, looks after Harry.
Etim. "Fig" means "not literal" and a
fig leaf is something that conceals or camouflages.
-Filch,
Argus:
Hogwarts' caretaker.
Etim. In Greek mythology, Argus was a
monster that had a hundred eyes and was ever-so-watchful. "Filch" means "to
steal".
-Firenze: A Centaur that lives in Forbidden
Forest.
He was the
Divination professor for part of the year in OotP, and was kicked out of the
forest by the other Centaurs because of that.
Etim. Italian name for
the city of Florence.
-Flamel, Nicolas: The
man who made the Philosopher's/Sorceror's Stone. He lived for over 600 years by
drinking the Elixir of Life from his stone.
Etim. He was a real alchemist, and
supposedly did create the Philosopher's Stone (not "Sorcerer's"). The tale was
that he had spent decades of his life trying to create the Philosopher's Stone,
which could turn any metal in to gold and unlock the secrets to immortality, but
could not figure it out.
-Flamel, Perenelle: Nicholas's wife, immortal like he is.
-Fletcher, Mundungus:
Supposed to look
after Harry at the beginning of OotP, he left on the job.
Etim. Mundungus is a stinking tobacco. Also, in some
countries (such as Spain) mondongo is a food made out of one of the cow's stomaches.
-Flint, Marcus: Ex-Captain of the
Slytherin Quidditch team (already graduated). S
-Flitwick, Filius: Charms
professor at Hogwarts and Head of Ravenclaw House.
Etim. Flitwick is a town in England. Filius means "son" in
Latin (maybe making reference to his short height).
-Floo Powder: powder used for transportation. You throw a little into the
fire, step in and are transported to another fireplace.
-Fluffy: Hagrid's three-headed dog, used to
guard the Philosopher's Stone. Cerberus the
three-headed dog was the guardian of the underworld in Greek mythology.
-Flume, Ambrosius: Owner of Honeydukes.
-Fudge,
Cornelius:
Minister of Magic.
Etim. Cornelius: See etimology of Lucius
Malfoy.
"Fudge," besides being a delicious chocolate confection, can mean nonsense. As a
verb, it means to evade or to falsify. In technological jargon, it means "to
perform in an incomplete but marginally acceptable way."

-Galleon:
Largest coin of wizards' currency. One gold galleon is made up of seventeen
silver sickles or 493 bronze knuts.
-Gnome: Small, elfish creature that dwells in wizards' gardens.
-Goyle, Gregory: One of Draco Malfoy's
friends-body guards.
-Granger,
Hermione
Jane:
One of Harry's best friends. Very smart witch, muggle-born.

Etim.
Hermione: Means well born or stone. Feminine version of Hermes (Greek messenger
god). In Greek Mythology, she was the daughter of Helen of Troy and King Menelaus of
Sparta. Hermione is also a character in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale.
-Great Hangleton: Town near Little Hangleton.
-Griphook: Gringotts goblin.
-Grey Lady: Ravenclaw ghost.
-Grindelwald: Dark wizard, defeated by Dumbledore in 1945.
-Gringotts: Wizarding bank run by goblins. Virtually impossible to
break into.
-Gryffindor: One of the four Houses
at Hogwarts.
The Sorting Hat describes Gryffindors in this way: "...You might
belong in Gryffindor,/ Where dwell the brave at heart,/ Their daring, nerve and
chivalry/ Set Gryffindors apart..."
Head of House: Prof.
McGonagall.
Founder: Godric Gryffindor.
House Colors: Scarlet and gold
House Animal: Lion
House Ghost: Nearly Headless Nick.
