Murder Trial LOS ANGELES (Feb 17, 1996 7:15 p.m. EST) -- Jurors deliberating the fate of murder defendant Snoop Doggy Dogg and his former bodyguard asked a judge to allow them to view the park where the killing took place. Prosecutors initially brought up the idea of a juror field trip in January. But the matter was litigated and later denied by Superior Court Judge Paul Flynn. The judge said the landscaping had changed at Woodbine Park since the slaying took place three years ago. On Friday, Flynn indicated he saw no reason to change his original decision, but said he would study briefs filed with the court and give his ruling on the matter when court resumes Tuesday. Defense attorneys for rap star Snoop Doggy Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and co-defendant McKinley Lee opposed the park viewing. They argued outside the jury's presence that the value of the trip would be minimal because of the landscaping changes and also because of seasonal differences. The victim was killed Aug. 25, 1993. Flynn also denied a defense request to allow Broadus to fly to New York for the weekend to appear on NBC-TV's "Saturday Night Live" with fellow rapper Tupac Shakur. The seven-man, five-woman jury completed its sixth day of deliberations Friday, but recessed early because a member of the panel became fatigued and needed some rest, Flynn said. Prosecutors contend Broadus, 24, and Lee, 25, followed alleged gang rival Philip Woldemariam, 20, to the park after an earlier confrontation outside Broadus' apartment. One of the few undisputed facts in the case is that Lee shot Woldemariam twice, killing him. The defense claims the shots were fired in self-defense from Broadus' Jeep Cherokee after Woldemariam attempted to pull a weapon from his waistband.
