Up In Smoke Tour NOT WRITTEN BY TOPPDOGG213 You pass these signs as you head to your seat at the Molson Amphitheatre, but considering how saturated with marijuana smoke the air in the venue was last night, it's a good bet none of the 16,000 who attended the Up In Smoke show really cared. It was a night when rules were broken and good taste thrown to the wind. If you were wearing a thong and had fake or real breasts, you were asked to show 'em -- and some did. Of course we were asked if we were "nice and high" and told to get "nice and fucked up before Eminem comes on." Snoop Dogg took this advice along with many members of the audience. Oh, and we were treated to a five-minute film featuring topless women and lots of violence. Hearing 16,000 mainly young whites cheer the protagonists, rap superstars Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg blew away one of the "bad guys" while he was bleeding to death, which made for the night's most gruesome skit. This was to be expected when Up In Smoke, a tour featuring the inventors of 'gangsta rap,' the hugely popular rap scene, set up its wild, anarchic party by the lake. Others were Xzibit, Ice Cube, Eminem and the one's mentioned on the ticket Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Also in tow were Mack 10, W.C. and former N.W.A member MC Ren. Things got interesting around 7:30 when Ice Cube took the stage with W.C. and Mack 10. He ran through some of his hits like The Nigga You Love To Hate, It Was A Good Day, Check Yo Self and We Be Clubbin'. Eminem does plenty of skits during the night, including raping his mother, choking his wife to death and threatening to kill anyone who takes his psychotic ramblings seriously on his massive Marshall Mathers LP. He followed with a set that drew material from both his discs - a good spread of all of his music - the only song I would have liked to hear that they didn't play was Stan, but Dido wasn't there so I guess they couldn't. Eminem - obviously playing to the attention surrounding him - wore an Orange Jail Suit with the words "County Jail" on the back for part of his set. If you did not know - Eminem faces weapons and assault charges stemming from two different incidents. As much as I love Eminem, the night, however, belonged to Dre and Snoop. Performing in front of one of the most fancy sets I've ever seen, I loved that gargantuan talking skull! The duo kicked out jams from The Chronic and Doggystyle, two of the most successful hip-hop albums of all time, as well as from Dr. Dre 2001. The over-the-top evening ended with an N.W.A reunion of sorts. Snoop, who subbed for the deceased Eazy E, joined Cube, Dre and MC Ren for Chin Music, a track off the Next Friday soundtrack. The show was phenomenal, the fans loved it and couldn't get enough, mind you most of them were "high" and "fucked" but none the less they loved every minute of it! I rate this show a 4 stars out of a possible 5 (if they played Stan it would get a 5) and I would encourage ANY hip hop or rap fans to go to future concerts of these hip hop stars. |
