Tha Eastside Story Snoop Dogg is breathing easy again these days. As he and Tha Eastsidaz (Tray Dee and Goldie Loc) sit at a rectangular table drowned by excess office space, they scarf down pizza while making everyone in sight laugh as they speak in their dazzling, native Long Beach dialect ("folkers," "kinfolkations" and "nephewleeses."). Obviously, Snoop and Tha Eastsidaz feel like they're at home tonight as they handle being in New York - over 3,000 miles away from their native sunny California - in the dead of winter as effortlessly as they open their eyes each morning. As they are 30 minutes away from doing an online chat with VIBE, SPIN and BLAZE online, they seem quite excited these days. And rightfully so. The Snoop Dogg Presents Tha Eastsidaz project is a debut for a veteran like Snoop as much as it is for new jacks like Tha Eastsidaz. The album marks the release of Snoop's first project as the CEO of his newly-established label, Dogg House Records, which is distributed by TVT Records, while it pushes Tha Eastsidaz to the forefront of the hip hop scene (The album debuted in the top ten during it's first week, selling over 100,000 copies). Although Snoop and The Eastsidaz's enthusiasm is contagious around the office, things haven't been going this well for the Top Dog in a while. There were such strenuous events in his life like facing trial for murder, leaving Death Row Records, trying to live up to the success of Doggystyle and dealing with the death of his friend and former labelmate, the late Tupac Shakur. Not to mention trying to reestablish himself after his last two lackluster albums, The Doggfather and The Game Is Sold, Not Told, and his widely criticized move to No Limit Records. As he, Tray Deee and Goldie Locc, who have since moved to a non-descript office where they are about to be interviewed, slump in their chairs and hold court with VIBE online, they speak on the good, the bad and the ugly. |
