The actual score was Florida State 48, Maryland 10.

The competition was a lot tougher in the Predixn Derby this week than it was on the field. The Seminoles rolled over the Terrapins, but you had to pick the score awfully close to make it into the vanguard of predix. Up front, Stephen Brown had the first perfect predixn of the season and only the second in Derby history, calling the score exactly. Did this give him a huge lead over the rest of the prognosticators? No, J. P. Johns and Greg Reeves were right behind him in the runner-up spot, each with a difference of only 1.00. The fourth-place predixn wasn't far back either; James Ewing was only 1.41 off the actual numbers.

Next came a four-way tie for fifth place; Dr Michael vanPelt, Kurt Siefken, Sonny Pieper, and Mike Edgerley all had differences of 4.00. This was a repeat trip to the top five for vanPelt, and it was the fifth top-five finish for Siefken, who now has more top-five finishes this season than anyone. This is also the third week in a row Siefken has finished fifth or better.

In fact, I was going to nominate Siefken to replace Associated Press columnist Richard Rosenblatt, noted many times in Derby results for his abyssmal record picking Florida State games. However, credit must be given where credit is due; Rosenblatt picked the 'Noles to win this week 49-10, which would have put him 'way up in second (1.00). Of course, he also picked Ohio State to beat Michigan and Arizona to beat Arizona State, but we're only talking about Florida State games here.

For instance, the game this coming weekend in Tallahassee. The Seminoles. The Gators. What else is there to say? So, e-mail your predixns of the final score to:

HWILLS@FREENET.TLH.FL.US

Put something like "FSU vs UF" in the subject line so I don't mistake it for another message from the gator.joke list server. Send it early so that it gets to me before kickoff, which is noon on Saturday, November 30. In fact, send it early so that we can all spend the latter part of the week concentrating on holiday gluttony. ;) All predixns received prior to the deadline will be recorded to be scored and ranked following the game. Results will be posted to alt.sports.football.college.fsu-seminoles and alt.sports.college.acc.

Good luck, and go 'Noles!

Herb Wills, HWILLS@FREENET.TLH.FL.US
