The actual score was Florida State 44, Wake Forest 7.

Allen Risley, one of this season's top forecasters, won this week's Predixn Derby with his 48 - 7 call; his difference of 4.00 is the tenth closest this season. Risley had another of the top ten predixns of 1996 when he won the Duke Predixn Derby with a difference of 3.16. Only Thurston Long has also won two Derby's this season. What I want to know is, how are any of the rest of us gonna win one of these things with these two guys grabbing all the titles for themselves?

Bruce Stilmack made his debut in the top five (4.47), while Kurt Siefken (5.00) logged his third top five finish. Only Al Risley has also made the top five three times during 1996. Tied for third with Siefken was Paul Barkowitz, a steady performer cracking the top five for the first time. And tied for fifth (5.83) were Ed Taylor and Fred Snyder. Taylor had been in the top five just two weeks ago; this was Snyder's first trip to that height.

Former winners and how they did today? Well...

I had hoped to have some other interesting statistics to report, but the old ISP went down just before kick-off on Saturday while I was trying to log the last of the predixns. As it is, I'm going to be late reporting the usual nonsense. Maybe next week.

Hey, no one got injured making their predixn this week, did you? I suffered severe bruises to my pride due to my performance, but I've come to expect that. This was a bad week for injuries, starting with Busby's cracked wrist, moving on to Byron Capers' broken finger, and let's not forget Andre Cooper getting racked up during *warm-ups*. I don't know who Coach Bowden is going to have left to put on the field against Southern Mississippi, who visits Doak Campbell next Saturday. The Seminoles used to play USM quite a bit, back when both schools were independents trying to fill up their schedules. The last meeting, 1989, is the one Florida State fans remember best: the Golden Eagles thumped the #1 ranked Seminoles in a season opener. Now, most of the current Seminoles weren't even in high school yet when this happened, so "revenge" isn't a word that's going to come up this week, but "caution" is, especially in light of what almost happened to Stevie Spurrier's boys at Vanderbilt yesterday.

Will the Golden Eagles humble another highly-touted Seminole team? No way? Send your predixn of the final score of the game to:

HWILLS@FREENET.TLH.FL.US

Put something like "FSU vs. USM" in the subject line; you wouldn't believe how much e-mail I delete unread. Send it early so that I get it before kickoff at 7:00 PM EST on Saturday, November 16. Don't believe for a second that e-mail is always instantaneous; I received a Georgia Tech predixn four days late even though it was sent on game day. All entries that arrive before the deadline will be stored to be rated and ranked following the game. Results will be posted to "alt.sports.football.college.fsu-seminoles" and "alt.sports.college.acc", and doing a search for "predixn" at www.dejanews.com will find it for you no matter how poor your news server is.

Thanks for playing, everyone. I'm looking forward to getting the USM predix. Good luck, and get psyched for the Gators!

Herb Wills, HWILLS@FREENET.TLH.FL.US
