The actual score was Florida State 49, Georgia Tech 3.
Some of the prognosticators looked at Georgia Tech's strong performances against teams like UNC and Virginia, noting also that Tech leads this series 7-5-1, and that they gave Charlie Ward fits in Atlanta just four years ago. Well, we looked at all that and got mauled nearly as bad as the Ramblin' Wreck did yesterday.
Al Kelley didn't have any such blinders on; he became this week's champion picker with a difference of 4.47. Harry Schoennagel was runner-up (6.40), followed by Tony Patterson (7.62), Jan (9.90), and Allen Risley (10.05). This was Risley's second trip to the top five this season; he had the top predixn in the Duke game.
For those of you who didn't do quite so well this week, I offer the performance of the "Predix Professional", Richard Rosenblatt of the Associated Press. AP paid Rosenblatt for picking FSU to win 31-24, which would have put him back in 41st with a difference of 27.66. You can see for yourself who actually -did- finish 41st.
With the Georgia Tech game over, many things are decided. For all practical purposes the ACC title race is over. FSU and Florida should each be 10-0 going into their Nov. 30 game. They may very well be ranked #1 and #2 on that day, although Nebraska will be trying to convince pollsters otherwise, hoping to erase their humiliating shut-out at Arizona State by eviscerating their opponents in the "Big Red and the Eleven Dwarves" conference.
Next on the Predixn Derby menu, though, is Florida State vs. Wake Forest. There isn't much to like about Wake's chances; their athletic department thinks so little of the team that they sold this home game to Orlando, so the game will be played in the Shadow of the Mouse at the Citrus Bowl. On the other hand, back in September WFU stunned a ranked Northwestern team, 28-27. But if you can cut through this fog and make a predixn of the score, send it to:
Put something like "FSU vs WFU" in the subject line so I don't mistake your message for yet another solicitation from the "spam-o-matic" cretins. Make sure that you e-mail it early enough that it gets here before kick-off on Saturday, November 9. All entries received before then will be recorded to be scored and ranked following the game, kind of like the ones above, you know? Results will be posted to alt.sports.football.college.fsu-seminoles and alt.sports.college.acc, or you can just do a search at www.dejanews.com for "predixn".
I'd like to thank everyone for playing this week, even the forty of you who beat the pants off of me. Just wait till next week, is what I always say. I'm looking forward to receiving your predixns for that one!
