The Gordon Lightfoot Auditorium
at the Orillia Opera House
Orillia is situated in the heart of Central Ontario. Its location places it at the gateway to Cottage Country, where Torontonians and much of the rest of the province of Ontario spend their weekends from May to October.
It is nestled between Lakes Couchiching and Simcoe, an area of unequaled beauty. It is most certain that it is here that Gordon Lightfoot was inspired to write his songs about the Canadian North!
The downtown area of Orillia is just steps away from the waterfront. The city boasts of 200 restaurants, shops and services with friendly, personalized attention for the shopper!
Orillia enjoys great natural resources. Not only can you take a stroll along the waterfront parks, but other parks offer family and sport activities, as well. The Lightfoot Trail runs through the city, linking the parks, the port, heritage and horticultural sites.
Built about the same time as Massey Hall, the 104-year-old Orillia Opera House has been designated an historic site by the Province of Ontario. There, The Sunshine Festival Theatre Company offers a sixteen week summer season of classic musicals and plays.
The Orillia Opera House is also the site of The Gordon Lightfoot Auditorium. On October 18th, 1997, Gordon Lightfoot attended a ceremony at the Orillia Opera House to dedicate the main auditorium in his honor.
The home and gardens of humorist Stephen Leacock , designated a National Heritage site, is also located in the city of Orillia, on Brewery Bay. This museum offers guided tours, has a Book & Gift Shop and offers refreshments to visitors.
