Overview & Purpose (civics objective)

#13 - Education

"Interact with educational institutions including schools for children and schools or agencies with programs for adult learners."

Additional Assessment Plan

Task 1: Students will locate places on a campus map (BL/BH) or give directions using a campus map (IL->A).

Task 2: Given an agency-created personal history, students will complete an authentic registration form for an adult education program.

Task 3: Students will list in writing 5 things students can do--or parents can help their children do--to become successful learners.

 

Language & Literacy Objectives:

All objectives below for BL-->ADV

1. Using a map, find essential physical locations on a school campus, at a district office, etc.
5. Label pictures, indentify vocabulary, and/or describe some things that adult learners can do to help their children or themselves be successful learners.
7. List the names of teachers, classroom numbers, and school name and phone number.
9. Read a simple school calendar and recognize minimum days and days when there is no school.
10. Fill out a school form, such as a registration form or permission slip.

Students will learn about the different types and levels of education available in the United States, including primary, secondary, post-secondary, graduate, adult education, etc. In addition, students will get practice completing an authentic (adapted) school registration form.

Task 2: “ESL Program at Torrance Adult School ”

Students will become more familiar with the ESL program at Torrance Adult School, and understand the differences between levels. They will learn how to read the program brochure, plus learn where key classrooms and offices are located on campus (e.g. counselors, media centers, etc.).

Task 3: “Successful Learner Strategies ”
