History of Services: 1934 Originally the ZUIHO was a high-speed oiler, named TSURIGIZAKI Janurary 1940 Converted into aircraft carrier. Janurary 1941 Commissioned and assigned to CarDiv 3 with HSOHO. December 1941 Attack on Philippines. January 1942 Supported the conquest of the East Indies. 4 June 1942 Battle of Midway ~ formed part of the Midway supporting force with YAMATO, NAGATO and MUTSU. 25 October 1942 Battle of Santa Cruz. A dive bomber from the USS Enterprise dropped a bomb in the middle of the flight deck. The ZUIHO was unable to operate aircrafts and withdrew. January ~ February 1943 Operation "KE" ~ evacuation of Guadalcanal. Support the withdrawl with ZUIKAKU and JUNYO. October ~ November 1943 Operation "RO" ~ reinforcement of Rabaul with SHOKAKU and ZUIKAKU. Feburary 1944 Battle of Philippines Sea. She scored a hit on battleship USS South Dakota. 24 October 1944 Operation "SHO" ~ The Battle of Leyte Gulf. She formed part of the Owazw'a decoy force with ZUIKAKU, CHIYODA and CHITOSE. On the 24th, the Battle off Cape Engano, she was hit by two bombs on the flight deck, and was near-missed six-times. But the fire and flooding was controlled and she was underway for another 6 hours while other ships were under attacked. Finally, she was sank by three waves of attackers. |
