History of Services:

14 December 1936
Hull laid down.

19 November 1937
Launched.

15 December 1938
Commissioned as Seaplane Carrier.

December 1943
Conversion completed and assigned to AirFloat 51, 12th Air Fleet.

Feburary 1943
Assigned to CarDiv 3, 3rd Fleet.

March 1944
Reinforcement duty with RYUHO and ferring aircrafts.

June 1944
Operation "A - GO" ~ Battle of Marianas with
CHITOSE and ZUIHO.

Hit by a bomb on the flight deck but the fire was extinguished.

25 October 1944
Operation "SHO" ~ Battle of Leyte Gulf. She formed part of the Ozawa's decoy force with
ZUIHO, ZUIKAKU and CHITOSE. Hit by four bombs and she went dead in water. HYUGA attempt to tow her but abandoned the plan due to further air attacks.

The rest of the force were forced to leave when enemy force was sighted. CHIYODA was attacked under gun fire and sank by TG 38.3 including four cruisers and nine destroyers.
