Strike against Rabaul and Lae.

Persuit American Carrier Force around Marshall Island.

Operation "C" - attack in the Indian Ocean. Strike against Colombo and Trincomalee, Ceylon.

7 May 1942
Battle of the Coral Sea, with sister-ship
SHOKAKU. Believed to be undamaged during the battle.

June 1942
Assigned to 2nd Striking Force, 1st Air Fleet, CarDiv 5.

July 1942
Assigned to 3rd Fleet, CarDiv 1.

24 August 1942
Battle of the Eastern Soloman. It damaged the USS Enterprise.

26 October 1942
Battle of the Santa Cruz. No damaged.

January ~ February 1943
Operation "KE" - evacuation of Guadalcanal. Covered the withdrawal of the Army with
ZUIHO and JUNYO.

October ~ November 1943
Operation "RO" - reinforcement of Rabaul, with
SHOKAKU and ZUIHO.

20 June 1944
Battle of Philippine Sea. Hit by one bomb next to the bridge but avoided all topedoes.

August 1944
Assigned to 3rd Fleet, CarDiv 3.

20 October 1944
Assigned to Operation "SHO" - formed part of Ozawa's decoy force.

24 October 1944
Battle of Cape Engano. Attacked by 80 aircrafts during the first wave and received a topedo hit and started to list heavily. Then attacked by another 100 aircrafts during the second wave. She was hit by 7 topedoes and 9 bombs and eventually rolled over and sank.

August 1945
Scrapped from the Navy List.
1
