History of Service: October 1927 Served as emperor's flagship in this year's annual Naval Review. Ocotober 1933 Served as emperor's flagship again for the annual Naval Review. Auguest 1941 Formed part of the BatDiv 1 with sistership NAGATO. 7 December 1941 "Operation Z"- Sorties to Bonin Island January 1942 Served as a target tug for the YAMATO in the gunnery trial. 4 June 1942 "Operation MI"- the Battle of Midway. NAGATO was part of the BatDiv 1 with YAMATO, NAGATO & light carrier HOSHO. They didn't engage any enemy. The following day the MUTSU took aboard one -half of the survivors from the four carriers rescued earlier from some destroyers. July 1942 Both NAGATO & MUTSU was transferred to BatDiv 2 with YAMASHIRO, FUSO, ISE & HYUGA. August 1942 Pursuit USS Long Island after it was spot by a flying boat. But not contact was made. 24 August 1942 The Battle of the Eastern Solomons. MUTSU provided close support. September 1942 MUTSU was assigned to the Main Body of the Guadalcanal Operation ForceI. 8 June 1943 When the MUTSU was moored two miles south-west of Hashirajima. The MUTSU's No.3 turret's magazine suddenly exploded, & the ship broke in two. The stern sank one day later. only 353 survivors were rescued out of 1474 crewmen. September 1943 Scrapped from navy list. |
