Operation "KidoButai" - attack on Pearl Harbor.

Striked against Rabaul and Lae.

Arrived at Yokosuka to pick-up aircrafts.

Together with
ZUIKAKU, ISE and HYUGA searched for suspious enemy around homeland area.

April 1942
Operation "C" - raid in the Indian Ocean. Striked against Colombo and Trincomalee, Ceylon.

8 May 1942
Operation "MO" - Battle of Coral Sea. Damaged by three bomb hits. Aovided all topedoes. Leave battlezone with full-speed after being damaged.

8 May 1942 ~ June 1942
Successfully avoided all enemy submarines. Return to Kure for repair.

July 1942
Assigned to 3rd Fleet CarDiv 1.

August 1942
Participate in the Battle of the Eastern Soloman. Lightly damaged.

26 October 1942
Battle of Santa Cruz. About 4 to 5 bomb hits but fire was able to be extinguished. Departed the battlezone with damaged
ZUIHO to Truk.

Emergence repair at Truk.

November 1942
Repair at Yokosuka.

July 1943
United with
ZUIKAKU.

October ~ November 1943
Operation "RO" - reinforcement of Rabaul, with
ZUIHO and ZUIKAKU.

March 1944
Assigned as flagship of 3rd Fleet, Admiral Ozawa Jisaburo.

April 1944

Flagship transferred to
TAIHO.

18 June 1944
Battle of Marianas. Hit by 3 topedoes by U.S.S. Cavalla (submarine). An uncontrollable fire broke out, eventually she blown apart.

August 1945
Scrapped from the Navy List.
