History of Services: 1917 Completed 1922 Visited by Prince of Wales during a state visit in Japan. 1941 Became the flagship of 1st Fleet in BatDiv2 7 December 1941 Operation Z - the attack on Pearl Harbour. Sorties to Bonni Islands with BatDiv 1 including the NAGATO, MUTSU & HOSHO. December 1941 - February 1942 Conducts battle training with the HYUGA in Inland Sea. March 1942 Search for Halsey's TF 16 that made a raid on Marcus Island, but no contact was made. April 1942 Pursuited the Halsey's TF16.2 that made the first bombing of Japan by 16 B-25 commanded by James H. Doolittle. May 1942 Gunnery practice in Iyo Nada with BatDiv1's NAGATO & MUTSU. May 1942 ISE's valves stick & one of the engine room floods. She underwent repairs at Kure, and fitted with a first experimental Type 21 radar. 29 May 1942 Operation MI - The Battle of Midway. Sorties with Aleutian Force with CruDiv 9, including cruisers KITAKAMI & OOI. July 1942 ISE & HYUGA assigned directly to the Combined Fleet. July 1942 - November 1942 Conducted battle exercise in Kure & Hashirajima. 23 February 1943 ISE was drydocked & started to convert to Hybrid carrier. Her No, 5 & 6 turrets were removed and a flight deck was built that was able to carry 22 aircraft. More anti-air guns were inserted. August 1943 Reassigned to BatDiv 2 of 1st Fleet. Conducted sea trials and made 25.3 knots. September 1943 Became a training ship for naval cadets from Etajima Naval Academy. October 1943 Shipped supplies and troops at Ujina. Sailed to Truk for a troop transport mission with CruDiv 18 icluding TATSUTA. Then remained as guardships for the fleet's second sorties to Eniwetok in response to TF 14 carrier raids on Wake Island. November 1943 Submarine USS Halibut torpedoed carrier JUNYO near the Bungo Suido while it was sailing with the ISE & YAMASHIRO and UNYO from Truk. The ISE was not damaged. November 1943 ISE underwent post-conversion workup. 1 May 1944 ISE & HYUGA assigned to 3rd Fleet of the CarDiv 4. Additional anti-air guns were added, two Type 22 radars are fitted. June 1944 Conducted Full-scale trials in Iyo Nada. Air Group 634 conducted the first catapult launch on the ISE. September 1944 Anti-air rocket launchers were fitted. 5 October 1944 ISE was assigned to Admiral Ozawa's Mobile Force. CarDiv 4 ISE & HYUGA, CarDiv 3: ZUIKAKU, ZUIHO, CHITOSE & CHIYODA. 20 October 1944 Operation SHO-I-GO: The Battle of Leyte Gulf. ISE served as Admiral Ozawa'a "decoy" Mobile Force, but no planes were carried. She operated with the ZUIKAKU & ZUIHO and provided anti-air cover to them. Admiral Mitscher's TF 38 launched 5 strikes against the Mobile Force. The ISE fired "sanshiki-dan" shells at the aircraft, she suffered two near misses during the first attack. Ise suffered eight near misses and one bomb hit on turret No.2 during the second attack. Later on, she picked up survivors after the ZUIHO sank. During the forth attack, ISE was attack by 35 dive-bombers, but it was never hit thought she suffered 34 near misses. Her hull plates ruptured near the waterline and took on water that caused slight damage to boiler rooms. The port catapult was hit by a bomb that killed between 40-50 personnel. 15 minutes later she was torpedoed by submarine USS Halibut, but all missed. She was tracked by more American submarine but they were unable to attack her. ISE arrived safely to Japan. November 1944 CarDiv 4 transport troops and supplies to Manila with DesDiv 43 & 61, but diverted to Spratly Islands after receiving reports of heavy air raids on Manila. She unloaded for transhipment to Philippines at the Spratly. December 1944 Assumed 'standby-alert' to intercept an American supply convoy heading for Mindanao. February 1944 Damaged by a mine near Singapore, and temporary repairs were carried out in Singapore. 6-9 February 1944 Operation Kita - ISE & HYUGA, OYODo and other destroyers were loaded with supplies including oil, rubber & tin. The force was attacked by 23 American submarines during this mission to Truk. but the force suffered no damage at all. February - September 1945 At Kure, ISE was camouflaged olive green with dark green, yellow, gray splotches since there were no fuel and aircraft available. 1 March 1945 Assigned to Kure as Reserve Ship. 19 March 1945 Hit by two bombs during a Vice Admiral Mitsher's TF 58 raid on Kure Naval Arsenal. March 1945 Transferred to Ondo Seto to served as a floating battery. 24 July 1945 Attacked by Vice Admiral McCain's TF 38. She was hit by 7 direct hit bombs and few near misses. She settles by the bow and took in water. After three days she was restored to an even keel. 28 July 1945 She was once again attacked by TF 38, she was hit by five bombs. Ise suffers a total of 18 direct hits and a number of near misses that day. Later on, 18 B-24 from Okinawa also bombed the ISE, but no hits were received. Finally, the ISE developed a 15 degrees list to starboard and sank in shallow water November 1945 Scrapped from navy list. |
