06/08/2000, Thursday - Kansas City Vacation
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 21 days)

Last weekend we took a trip to Kansas City to Uncle Rick's wedding. Click here for all the details and fun stories.

06/09/2000, Friday - Summer Fun
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 22 days)
Here are some things that will be keeping Nicole busy this summer. Both she and Christopher are in Summer Shine, which is like Vacation Bible School. It meets twice a week.

Nicole sitting at piano (5/10/2000)On Monday, Nicole started piano lessons. There's a good teacher in our neighborhood who has also substituted in Nicole's Kindergarten, so Nicole knows her. So far it's going quite well. The hardest part right now is keeping Nicole from going too far through the book past her current lesson. Our piano is the ugliest you've ever seen (almond crackle paint, Uug), but considering I traded my old 486 computer for it, it was a great deal!

Both kids are also enjoying the summer reading program at the library. They're supposed to read five books a week. Not hard considering we read about five books a day right now. I still can't believe how well Nicole is reading. Wednesday night I watched her read a 64 page book aloud (not an easy reader) in about five minutes.

In about a week Nicole will start Spanish Camp. We thought it would be good to give her some language experience while she's very young, so she can learn it faster. It's an emersion style program where they have an English section part of the day and then they switch to a Spanish section. They take Spanish speakers and do the same. It should be interesting.

06/12/2000, Monday - Puddle Splashing
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 25 days)
We got almost five inches of rain this weekend. Yesterday it cleared out in the afternoon so we took the kids out to splash in the puddles. They both had a great time and got soaked.

06/13/2000, Tuesday - More Amazing Reading News
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 26 days)
Nicole writing before wedding (6/3/2000)
The kids went to the library yesterday. They're in a summer reading program. I'm sure you're already tired of me talking about Nicole's reading, but there are always new things to amaze me. Last week she read a whopping 40 books. As a result she got eight stickers to put on her clock. That's the reading program's thing this year. Fifteen of those books she read yesterday in the library while waiting for Christopher's program.

Many of the books Nicole is reading are pretty difficult. One book she read last night was "The Black Stallion". It's a young reader version, but still a challenge. A neighbor gave her the book "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. Her illustrations are amazing if you'd want to look her up. Tina found Nicole reading it by herself and it too is not a very easy read. It has words like commotion, disappeared, investigate, silhouettted and even glinty. Nicole doesn't seem to mind working her way through them.

06/19/2000, Monday - Father's Day, Language Camp
(age: 6 years, 4 months, 1 day)
Nicole made me a wonderful card for Father's Day. She drew my picture and even included a cloth tie. She also wrote happy Father's Day on some heart paper for me.

Today Nicole starts language camp. The language is Spanish, of course. I can't wait to see how she likes it.

06/23/2000, Friday - Waving Goodbye
(age: 6 years, 4 months, 5 days)
The other day the kids woke up before I left for work. I was talking to Nicole in her room. She went over to the window and said, "Daddy, when you go to work I stand here and watch you go. I want to see you as much as I can." Her room is right off the garage, so I guess she hears me often and watches me leave. As I left that day I looked back to see her waving from her window. How is a daddy supposed to leave for work under those conditions?
