Nicole's sweet smile (5/7/2000)05/01/2000, Monday - Get Well Card. Fried Shrimp.
(age: 6 years, 2 months, 14 days)
Tina got a touch of the flu yesterday. Nicole was really sweet. She immediately sat down to write a get well card. She drew a very sad girl on the front and wrote a nice get well saying on the inside. Christopher really likes to do what Nicole does, so he made a card himself. It was fun to see them take that initiative.

Nicole had birthday parties on both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it was at a restaurant where all the wait staff dress as characters. Nicole's waiter was dressed like Woody from Toy Story. She ate fried shrimp that she thought was chicken and she liked it. Now she knows she likes shrimp.

05/12/2000, Friday - Test. What if We Die?
(age: 6 years, 2 months, 25 days)
Last week Nicole had strep throat. That wasn't fun. She did recover in time to take her last Reach test (talented and gifted program at school). It was a creativity test. For some reason, she was the only one taking the test. They gave her a paper with an oval on it and told her to draw a picture. She drew dinosaur legs and a tail, turning the oval into an egg. I think it's interesting that she tried to draw the dinosaur proportional to the egg, showing only the legs. They gave her another page with different things on it and she had to draw a picture for that as well. I don't know how they judge these. I guess it's subjective. We won't get all the results until July.

A few months ago, Nicole asked Tina what would happen to her if both Mommy and Daddy die. We told her she'd go live with Uncle Steve & Aunt Marla. She thought a second and the said, excitedly, "And Hana?!" Tina said yes and she said "Oh Boy!". So much for being sad.

05/18/2000, Thursday - Parent Teacher Conference.
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 0 days)
Nicole and Christopher (5/24/2000)
Tina and I went to Nicole's parent-teacher conference on Monday. Her teacher said she's way above grade level in all areas. Her report card was marked good (it's either good or needs work, no grade) on all items. The evaluation had three scoring levels (kind of a high-normal-needs work thing). She got the top score in her evaluation on every item except one. That one was still acceptable. Her teacher was very apologetic about it. She explained that the story for that question was so simple that she thought Nicole was bored with it. When asked to tell what was in the story, she used general terms instead of specific terms. It sounded like since Nicole could see the story was simplistic, she didn't think it needed much explaination. Anyway, her teacher assured us she's doing well above normal.

Both Nicole and Christopher are really enjoying their grandparents right now. It's fun to have them around for more than just a few days. The kids are really warming up to them. It's fun to see them enjoy each other.

05/23/2000, Tuesday - Steam Train Ride. (Click here for more pictures.)
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 5 days)
On Saturday we took a trip to ride a wonderful authentic steam train. See Christopher's journal for all the details. Nicole liked the train but didn't want to tour the engine. She seemed a bit scared. I think the ride got a little long for her too, but we had a lot of fun together. (Click here for more pictures.)

05/25/2000, Thursday - Last Day of Kindergarten.
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 7 days)
Nicole sitting at piano (5/10/2000)
Well, today is Nicole's very last day of Kindergarten. She has done such a wonderful job. We are very proud of her. She has learned a whole lot about reading and can read better than most all of her friends. We will miss her wonderful teacher Mrs. Martin, but I'm sure there will be many great teachers to come. Nicole has had a very good start.

05/31/2000, Wednesday - Summer Plans.
(age: 6 years, 3 months, 13 days)
Summer plans are shaping up. Nicole is signed up for piano and swimming lessons as well as a couple vacation Bible schools. She should do well in swimming. We went to the pool on Monday and she was a little fish, swimming everywhere without assistance.
