07/03/2000, Monday - Grown Up Decision. Reading to Christopher. Swimming
(age: 6 years, 4 months, 16 days)
Nicole at sand pits in Bridgeport (7/31/2000)
Last Friday when I was talking to Nicole before bed she told me, "Daddy, I'm having a problem growing up." That sure peaked my attention. She continued, "I can't decide between being a cowgirl or an artist." I assured her she had plenty of time to decide and that she didn't have to worry. She came back with, "I don't even have a horse!" Oh, the problems of youth.

The other day the kids were off playing somewhere in the house when it got strangely quiet. That, of course, is worrisome to parents, so I went back to Christopher's room to see what was going on. Both were on Christopher's top bunk and Nicole was reading a Little Mermaid book to Christopher. It was so sweet. I tried to get it on video, but by the time I returned with the camera, they were on to other things.

Some friends of ours had a pool party on Saturday where I got to see some of the new skills Nicole and Christopher are learning. Nicole is all over the pool with no trouble. She showed me how she's now learning the crawl stroke. It's looking pretty good.

07/18/2000, Tuesday - 1st Grade Sunday School. VBS Homework. Piano Lessons
(age: 6 years, 5 months, 0 days)
Nicole is now in the first grade Sunday School at church. It's a real change from the pre-school and kindergarten program. Much more studious. And Nicole is loving it. A week ago she told us that she had to look up her memory verse in the Bible and read it to the class. And she could do it. We got her a new grown up Bible a couple weeks ago and she's learning so fast.

Both Nicole and Christopher started another Vacation Bible School yesterday. When I got home from work, Nicole was doing her homework and seemed to really be enjoying it. She had some worksheets to do with some coloring and connect the dots. She is also retelling her Bible lesson by writing it down. She gets points for each thing she completes. She has an wonderful memory and is having no trouble remembering the memory verses. It's amazing to watch.

Nicole's piano lessons are going well also. She's learning all the basics about time signatures, different note types, ties and other notations. She's playing songs with two note cords and seems quite proud when she can play it correctly.

07/21/2000, Friday - Summer Reading.
(age: 6 years, 5 months, 3 days)
I'm very proud of Nicole. The summer library reading program ended yesterday. Nicole read a total of 125 books! And those are books she read herself, not the books we've read to her.

Yesterday I burned a music CD with songs I want to play for my parent's 40th wedding anniversary party. I was playing it at home to try it out. Christopher was fussing about it a little when Nicole piped in saying, "Get used to it, Christopher. That's the music for Grandma and Granddad's anniversary." I'm glad they're enjoying the music <grin>.

07/28/2000, Friday - Winning at the Thomas Movie.
(age: 6 years, 5 months, 10 days)
Last weekend we went to see a pre-release showing of "Thomas and the Magic Railroad", starring Christopher's favorite Thomas the Tank Engine characters. We won the tickets from a local train store and we had a really good time. The kids really loved the movie. Before the show one of the sponsers asked trivia questions of the audience for prizes. Nicole answered one of the questions correctly and won a t-shirt! She had to bravely go to the front of the theater to claim her prize and she did a great job. The question was, "What's the name of the bus in the Thomas shows?" The answer is Bertie.
