04/04/2000, Tuesday - April Fools Day.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 17 days)
Nicole made big plans for April fools day. It was completely her idea and she did everything
herself. First she made a ghost costume by taping paper into a box type formation and cutting eyes out of one of
the pieces. She then jumped out and scared us with it. She also hid under her desk, called to me and then displayed
some "ghost scissors" out from under the desk. It's hard to describe, but basically she covered her hand
with tissues and held the scissors up as if a ghost were cutting the paper. Her last trick was pretty clever. We
always read stories at night. She fan folded a book mark and put it in the bible we always read. When you opened
the book it was supposed to spring up and surprise you. It didn't really spring, but I thought it was a neat idea.
Nicole's soccer game was rained out over the weekend, but we did attend the world premiere of the latest Veggie
Tales video at a local theater. The kids really enjoyed that.
04/05/2000, Wednesday - Reading To The School Board.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 18 days)
Last night Tina and I took Nicole to the school board meeting. She and some of her classmates were chosen
to show off their reading skills to the board. They showed a wonderful video presentation of the kindergarten classroom
and then took the kids in pairs up to a schoolboard member. It was much better than having the kids stand at a
podium. More one-on-one. Nicole took one of the books she wrote and published herself as well as one of the books
she's read in class. We watched her talk to the lady and then read her stories. She did a wonderful job. She told
us that the lady asked her if she was in first grade. Nicole thought that was just "so funny".
But the book she read to them really was from the first grade. They treated the kids to ice cream after the meeting.
We're very proud of Nicole.

her school section below.
04/12/2000, Wednesday - Last of Soccer. Wanting a Dog. Butterfly.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 25 days)
On Saturday Nicole had a soccer game. The team was really tough so the girls had to really work. Nicole
keeps improving and seems to enjoy the games. During the game I kicked a ball around with Christopher. He really
enjoyed that since he's not really interested in watching his sister.
Nicole had a friend over to play Saturday afternoon and then we went to another home where the kids could play
with lots of their friends. While their the neighbor's puppy snuck under the backyard fence and the kids were delighted
to play with it. Nicole's a bit shy around dogs, but she really thinks she wants one. Mom took her to the library
and they got a how-to-take-care-of-your-dog book.
On Sunday the kids had a birthday party in the afternoon and Tina took them for a walk around the block after that.
Nicole came back very excited. A yellow butterfly had landed on her hand for a moment before flying off. Christopher
likes imitating his sister, so when talking to one of the neighbors he proudly stated "When I was a little
boy, a blue butterfly landed right on my knee; when I was a little boy." The neighbor looked at Tina with
a big smile. It's funny to hear him talk about his "little boy" experiences. That's how he identifies
the past. Of course, he usually makes up these experiences.
04/14/2000, Friday - Why Does Daddy Work?
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 27 days)
Most nights, when putting Nicole to bed, I open things up for her to ask me any questions she
wants. I want her to feel like she can always come to me when she needs to. Last night she was thinking about summer
vacation coming up and was very excited. She asked with anticipation if I would be staying home for the summer.
I had to break it to her that I still had to work in the summer. She then asked, "Why do you have to work
so much?" That started a conversation about money and paying for things, etc. But I pointed out that her
mommy doesn't have to work and told her that she should thank God every night that Mom can stay home and take care
of them. Many children don't have that blessing. She understood and then listed off quite a few names of children
from her school who come from day care and are bussed back to day care after Kindergarten.
Here's a drawing she did that I think is really good. It's a man with a beard under a heat wave (the red lines).

04/17/2000, Monday - Monkey Bars
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 30 days)
Nicole really loves the monkey bars right now. We have a wooden swingset that has them and she
spends most of her time up there when she's out back. She has even developed calluses on her hands and one blister.
04/26/2000, Wednesday - Easter Fun, Lost Tooth.
(age: 6 years, 2 months, 8 days)
Last weekend was Easter. We had a wonderful time hunting for eggs and celebrating Jesus' death and resurrection.
You can read more about our Easter fun on Christopher's page.
Most memorable for me was Nicole reading the treasure notes herself that were hidden in the eggs.
Nicole is now singing "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth..." Yes, she lost that second
front tooth and she's really cute! It's been hanging at an angle for a few days and today it was hanging by a thread
until after school when out it came.
04/28/2000, Friday - Tooth Fairy Goofed.
(age: 6 years, 2 months, 10 days)
The tooth fairy goofed on Wednesday. She forgot to come get Nicole's tooth. I hear Nicole was
very upset. Nicole is pretty sure the tooth fairy is us, her mom and dad. Last night she said, "The
tooth fairy is you and Mom. Isn't it?" I just smiled and she smiled back. She went up to Tina last
night and asked, "The tooth fairy is going to come before she goes to bed. Isn't she?"
I think she was reminding us to get her tooth before we go to bed.
Well, we remembered. Because we goofed, the tooth fairy brought Nicole an extra gift. A small yellow purse with
yellow feathers on the handle filled with things like yellow lip gloss, etc. I ... I mean the tooth fairy wrote
a nice note saying she was sorry and to enjoy the extra gift.
Retiring Nicole's older signature: The signature below has been on Nicole's home page for nearly three
years. It was time to get a new one. I'm placing her old one here to keep it's memory.
