05/01/2000, Monday - Eating Like a Dog. All Better Card
(age: 3 years, 5 months, 12 days)
Christopher with Grandma
Saturday afternoon Nicole and Christopher went to one of their two birthday parties. It was a "Cat" theme. Both kids came home face painted with animal faces. Nicole was a unicorn and Christopher was a dog. I guess being a cat wasn't as apealing to them. One of the big successes of the party was that each child was given a cat bowl with their names painted on it. The cake was served in the cat bowl. Tina said that Christopher actually ate his cake like a dog. Both kids also insisted they have their morning breakfast cereal in their cat dishes on Sunday morning.

Tina got the flu Sunday at the end of church. She's feeling much better today. Nicole and Christopher were really sweet, making her get well cards. It was a strange night because Tina ended up sleeping on the couch (seemed more comfortable in her condition). We had some bad thunderstorms and Christopher ended up sleeping with me. He was still asleep when I got up this morning. I took a shower and Tina moved back into bed next to Christopher. When Christopher woke up and saw Mommy he said with surprise, "Mommy, are you feeling better?" She told him yes and he jumped out of bed and ran to the kitchen. A minute later he came back with a "card" with a smiling face on it.

05/12/2000, Friday - Wanting to Go To Work. Spelling. Grandparents.
(age: 3 years, 5 months, 23 days)
Last Friday Tina wasn't feeling well, so I didn't leave for work until after breakfast. Usually I leave before the kids get up. It was nice spending some time with them in the Christopher helping Granddad (5/11/2000)morning. Christopher, when hugging me good-bye, grabbed my leg and said he wanted to come to work with me. I wish he could have.

Christopher loves to try things his sister can do, whether it's reading, spelling or the monkey bars. Yesterday he was taking a bath and I asked him if he wanted to get out. He replied,

"No. E-O No."

Well, his spelling has a ways to go, but he's trying! He did learn how to spell 'zoo' in school the other day, so I think that has him excited about it.

The Davis grandparents are visiting for the next few weeks. The kids are in heaven. They've really loved playing with my folks. Christopher's at a really good age now. He's really warmed up to them and they're having a great time. They live far away, so we don't get to see them as often as we like.

05/18/2000, Thursday - First Shower. Potty. No More School.
(age: 3 years, 5 months, 29 days)
Last night Christopher took his first shower. He had a blast. He was so happy there, singing, playing, etc. He knows his big sister takes showers and I think this made him feel like a big boy.

Christopher is almost completely potty trained now. It's very nice. He still doesn't make it through the night, but he is waking up dry from naps often. He really has seemed to grow up fast the last month or so.

Yesterday was Christopher's last day of school for the year. Now it's off to summer activities. He'll be taking swimming lessons from the same lady that has taught Nicole. He's really looking forward to it.

05/23/2000, Tuesday - Steam Train Ride (Click here for more pictures.)
(age: 3 years, 6 months, 3 days)
Texas State Railway Steam Engine
We took a special trip on Saturday to Palestine, Texas. It's a small town a couple of hours southeast of Dallas where Texas starts to get wooded. While there we rode on an authentic steam train which travelled to Rusk Texas between two state parks. It was cloudy and cool that day, the woods were beautiful and the ride relaxing. You couldn't have asked for a better day.

The train trip was an hour and a half each way. The only down side was that we only had about 45 minutes for lunch in Rusk before we had to turn around and go back. Rusk's park had a beautiful big lake surrounded by hills and forests.

The kids loved the trip. Especially Christopher who loves trains. He even got to sit on the engineers lap in the cab of the locomotive. That was before the train left, of course. He was bouncing off the walls in the coach. He'd run between me and Mommy, look out the windows, toot with the train whistle, etc. Nicole and Christopher both liked being with the whole family. We were basically a captive audience and they loved the attention. Click here for more pictures.

05/25/2000, Tuesday - Sounding out Letters
(age: 3 years, 6 months, 5 days)
Christopher has really been learning his letter sounds. It helps that Nicole is learning to read. He likes to copy her. Yesterday, Nicole was trying to spell the word "done" she was saying the word out loud when Christopher stepped in and said,

"da, da, da, done. Dee is for done."

That made Nicole mad. She wanted to do it herself. A couple days ago he was playing with the letter 'T'. He said,

"ta, ta, ta, train. Tee is for train. ta, ta, ta, tomato. Tee is for tomato. ta, ta, bird... oops!"

We all laughed. He did a great job catching his own mistake.

05/31/2000, Tuesday - Summer plans.
(age: 3 years, 6 months, 11 days)
Christopher's going to have a busy summer. He will be taking his first swimming lessons and attending some vacation Bible school as well.

I think Christopher will do well in swimming lessons. We went to the pool on Monday and he loved it. His favorite activity was jumping off the side of the pool into our arms. He was really cute. He'd stand on the side and tell us to back up, shooing us with his arms. Then you'd better be prepared, because he was off like superman.
