Nicole's school picture (3/23/2000)03/02/2000, Thursday - Cool Dad!
(age: 6 years, 15 days)
Last night Christopher was playing outside. It was a nice day, so the kitchen windows were open. He came up to the screen on one window and started banging on it. I said something like "Stop, Christopher, I worked hard making that screen.", because I did make the screen. Anyway, Nicole looked at me and asked "Did you really make the screen?". I told her yes and she replied "Wow, what a cool dad!" That really made my day.

Nicole has started soccer practice. Her first spring game is on Saturday.

Nicole loves writing in her diary. She now keeps it under the bed. I don't really know why. It's not exactly a secret.

Do you ever wonder what Nicole does in Kindergarten? I've added a new link to information in Nicole's school section.

03/07/2000, Tuesday - Reading Books, Kindergarten Methods
(age: 6 years, 20 days)
Nicole continues to amaze me with her progress in school. On Saturday she bought a Dr. Suess book, "Snow", at a garage sale. She took it home and read the whole thing by herself. It's 60 pages long!!! She got another book at the library, "Go Dogs Go" and easily read all of its 60 pages as well. Now she even corrects me if I skip a word or say the wrong one while I'm reading to her.

In church on Sunday Nicole learned the story of the little children coming to Jesus. When we got home, she found the story in her picture bible and brought it to me to read to her. She loves books and reading. I was pleased that she had gotten so much out of the Sunday School story.

A while back I attended an evening meeting where Nicole's teacher and assistant went over the schedule they keep in the Kindergarten classroom. Then last week I went to an open house where Nicole could show me everything she did in her classroom. It really is wonderful. My memory is fuzzy, but I just remember playing, doing crafts and taking naps in my Kindergarten. Nicole's class is full of words, books, computers, math, etc. The writing program is amazing. The students write down ideas of what subjects they want to write about. They then write their stories out in their "draft books". After writing a draft, they do a "student conference" where they show the story to another student who critiques and gives other ideas. They then do edits of the draft using techniques taught by the teacher. Then the draft goes to a "teacher conference" where more ideas are shared. Once approved the student "publishes" the book, writing and illustrating the final copy complete with cover and bound with staples. Some of the published works are then shared orally with the class. Now the students are learning word processing. Nicole will publish a book that way next week. Does that sound like the Kindergarten you remember?

This week is Spring Break for both Christopher and Nicole. Nicole has written out a list of 11 things she wants to do this week. A neighbor boy stopped by selling candy, so we bought some and shared it with the kids. I got the last piece, so Nicole wrote a song about it "The last one's for Daddy" sung to the tune of "I'm following the leader, the leader, the leader".

03/10/2000, Friday - Daddy's Reward
(age: 6 years, 23 days)
As I've stated in Christopher's journal, we have an incentive reward program for him to potty train. Well, Nicole has been very good about letting Christopher get rewards, but she is very interested in what programs we can set up for her. I think Tina has something going for "nice talk" to encourage her to always speak kindly to her brother, parents and friends.

Last night I put Nicole to bed and kissed her goodnight. I left the room to say goodnight to Christopher and Mommy went into Nicole's room. Later, Tina told me that Nicole said the following:

Daddy is such a nice daddy. What kind of reward can we get for him?

03/16/2000, Thursday - Girl's Growing Up
(age: 6 years, 29 days)
Tina and I taught the 4 year olds in Sunday School last Sunday. It's the class just below Nicole's class. For the second service, they combine the two classes for Children's Church. At the end of our class, in came the line of kids from Nicole's class. Nicole looked so tall and grown up with her purse over her shoulder and the Bible in her hand. She then sat down and began reading her Bible, which is King James version. I don't know what she's able to read, but she studied it for some time.

Tina and I were cleaning up while the new teacher for the next hour got his class started. He talked about a boy in the class who had gone on a missions trip to Russian orphanages. Nicole listened and then very nicely raised her hand. When called on she told of her neighbors who went to Russia and adopted a girl from one of those orphanages. I was very proud because of how well she was interacting with the class.

03/17/2000, Friday - Reading To Me - Upside Down
(age: 6 years, 1 month)
Nicole had Spring Break last week and I think has been very glad to be back to school. She really does love it. She's been bringing home books and reading them to me. She's really cute because she holds the book facing me so I can see the pictures and she ends up reading it upside down.

03/21/2000, Tuesday - First Soccer Goal! Favorite Bible Passage. Tooth.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 3 days)
soccer ball
Nicole had her first Spring soccer game on Saturday. She made her FIRST GOAL ever in a game!!!! It was very exciting. She kicked it from a ways away from the goal too. She got a smile on her face from ear to ear. She was so excited. Saturday night we were saying prayers as usual before bed. I asked Nicole if she had anything else she wanted to pray (other than the memorized prayer). She prayed this: "Thank you for giving me the strength to make a goal today."

I've told you before that Nicole is really reading up a storm. She has a kids Bible that she loves to read. Her favorite passage is now Matthew 3, where Jesus gets baptized. She is not afraid of a challenge. She even tried to read it to me in her little King James Bible. She found the passage herself too. She would get frustrated with the big words, but did amazingly well anyway.

Tina talked to Nicole's teacher yesterday. She said Nicole is reading at a mid-first grade level.

Nicole is about to lose a top front tooth. It's very loose, but she doesn't like to wiggle it, so it doesn't come out a fast as it might otherwise. Tina served bagels for breakfast yesterday. You should have seen poor Nicole trying to eat that chewy bagel using her side teeth. She did it, though. As chance would have it, next Thursday is school picture day. I don't know if her tooth will last that long.

Nicole missing a top tooth (3/22/2000)03/23/2000, Thursday - Third Tooth Lost. A Big Test.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 5 days)
Nicole lost her third tooth yesterday. This time it's the left top tooth which gives her a noticeable smile. Very cute. And it just so happens that today is picture day at school.

Yesterday Nicole took her first test for the talented and gifted program. She thought it was fun. Her teacher made it sound like there would be others from her class taking it, but it turned out she was the only one. The only other student taking the test was a first grade boy. Nicole didn't seem to mind. We were afraid she might be uneasy about going alone.

03/27/2000, Monday - First Goal of the Game.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 9 days)
Nicole played another soccer game on Saturday. We thought to tell her that she shouldn't expect to get a goal every game since she made one the previous week. But she went out and made the first goal of the game. It is so much fun to watch her play.

03/29/2000, Wednesday - Reading to the School Board.
(age: 6 years, 1 month, 11 days)
Yesterday afternoon Tina went to pick up Nicole at school. Her teacher asked if Nicole could come to next Tuesday's school board meeting to read to them. They are determining next year's budget and Mrs. Martin wants to show off Nicole's skills. Isn't that a nice compliment? There will be other students there, of course, but we're very proud of Nicole.
