03/03/2000, Thursday - Slumber Party at Home
(age: 3 years, 3 months, 14 days)
A couple nights ago both Christopher and Nicole jumped into Nicole's bed after getting their pajamas on. They both decided it would be fun to sleep together that night. We told them we'd let them try it, but if it got too noisy or other problems arose, we'd have to move Christopher to his room. They had the best time. I could hear whispering and giggling going on. I was pleased that they were getting along so well. It became clear after a while that they weren't going to be able to go to sleep. So we separated them. But they were getting along really well and it was a fun experiment. Nicole even said that she wanted bunk beds so they'd be in the same room like her friend Matthew and his younger sister.

Here is Christopher's February school report from his teacher (for the whole class).

Miss Kathy's Class
February 2000
"February was a fun month for our class. Our first unit was Valentines. We liked finger painting, making cards to mail in our pretend post office. Thank you moms, for our wonderful Valentine parties.

We also had a log of fun with our space unit. We made clouds and stars. We pretended to fly airplanes, spaceships, etc.

We are having a great time with Texas Rodeo unit. They loved riding "Bubbles" the pony on Tiny Texas day. Rodeo Day was a lot of fun! Thank you for all your help."

03/07/2000, Tuesday - Rodeo Week
(age: 3 years, 3 months, 18 days)
Cowboy Christopher (3/3/2000)
Christopher has Rodeo Week at school and loved wearing cowboy boots and hat. They brought a pony for them to ride and he really loved that as well. I heard he got on and yelled "Giddeup, Bullseye!" That's the horse from Toy Story 2.

We're still potty-training Christopher. Let's just say he's very strong willed. We have a incentive program now for staying dry and clean. It's working pretty well, but we've had some spectacular failures as well. We won't get into it here.

03/10/2000, Friday - Scary Smoke Detector
(age: 3 years, 3 months, 21 days)
Christopher doesn't like his smoke detector. We have one in his bedroom. He's afraid it will be loud and I think he may think there's fire inside. It has a little blinking red light that he can see at night. He's even asked me to take the battery out before.

Christopher always sleeps on his side facing the wall. We didn't think much about it other than to notice he preferred that position. The other day, though we found out that he sleeps that way so he doesn't have to "look at the fire" (that blinking smoke detector light).

03/16/2000, Thursday - All Boy. Prefers Mom. Incentives.
(age: 3 years, 3 months, 27 days)
Christopher is all boy. The other night, Tina was getting him ready for bed and he asks "What's this, Mom?" It's a huge splinter imbedded in his hand from playing outside. Nicole would have been very upset about it, but Christopher just wonders what it is. I think boys are born with half the nerves of girls.

Christopher is in a stage where he only likes his dad when it's convenient. When he's really in need, he wants his mom. He's usually in need when he wakes up. Last Saturday Tina got up to take a shower. I was still in bed when Christopher came in all groggy, calling for mom. I sat up and asked him how he was, etc. He immediately put on a scowl, pointed his finger at me and exclaimed "Talk to yourself! Just talk to yourself." There was nothing I could do. He was in a mood. I laid back down to get a bit more rest.

The kids, especially Christopher, really like Toy Story and Toy Story 2. We hadn't seen it for a while, but Disney has finally come out with some new "Woody" and "Jessie" dolls with real pull strings that make them talk. They're pretty expensive, so we're having the kids earn them. Christopher needs to stay clean and dry for some time. Nicole is saving up her allowance money to pay for it. Hopefully it will be a good lesson in saving, cost and earning.

03/17/2000, Friday - Stories and Memories.
(age: 3 years, 3 months, 27 days)
Last night at supper Christopher started telling a story:

"When I was a little boy I was stung by a bee and I cried and cried..."

In reality he never has been stung by a bee. Nicole spoke up saying "Daddy was stung by a bee. He was mowing and the nest was in the corner." Nicole has an amazing memory. I told her that probably over a year ago. It actually happened before she was born. Tina then said "Some things you just don't forget." Nicole then said "Ya, like the car wreck." I'll never live that one down. For those who don't know, I was taking the family to McDonalds when Chistopher wasn't even one yet. A car turned left in front of me and I hit them in their passenger door. It really crumpled our Taurus (no one was hurt). That's why we have a minivan today.

03/21/2000, Tuesday - Asking about Jesus. Blaming Jeffrie. Memory. The Lick. Breaking Bones
(age: 3 years, 4 months, 1 days)
We had the Christian music video station on the television on Saturday. One of the songs showed Jesus on the cross. Christopher asked "Why did Jesus die?" So we told him how Jesus died to save us from our sins and if we believe in him he saves us. Mommy then led him in a prayer asking Jesus into his heart. He prayed very seriously. He's still very young, but he seems to understand more all the time.

Christopher blames his friend Jeffrie for everything. I don't know why. His Buzz Lightyear toy had low batteries and its voice sounded scratchy. Christopher would tell us "I guess Jeffrie must have left him outside." I don't think Jeffrie has even played with Buzz. We did replace the batteries and Buzz is fine. We'll have to see what poor Jeffrie gets blamed for next.

Speaking of Toy Story. Christopher jumped on my lap yesterday and recited an entire scene from the first movie. It was the scene where Woody was talking to the other toys about the upcoming move. "... if you don't have a moving buddy, GET ONE! ..." That's only a small excerpt. The memory these kids have is phenomenal.

One of the funniest moments of the weekend was when the kids were enjoying popsicles. Tina asked Christopher, who was on her lap, "Can I have a lick?" Christopher promptly turned around and gave her a cold, wet lick across her face.

I was putting Christopher to bed Saturday night when he started running his fingers through my hair. He told me "You'd look funny shaved." I can't imagine the comments he'll give Granddad now. Also around bedtime, he came up and gave me a big hug. I told him to squeeze me tight. He stopped, looked at me and said "I don't want to break your bones."

03/24/2000, Friday - School Program. Bite Attach.
(age: 3 years, 4 months, 4 days)
Last night was Christopher's open house at pre-school. The children sang songs to us and we got to visit their classrooms. Christopher did really well. A couple of my favorite songs were "If I Had A Little Red Box" and "Little Fish". I'm going to try to get him to sing solos on video or into the computer.

There was one incident at the program. When Christopher's class sat down after singing, another boy his age, but in a different class, bit him on the back. At the time we knew he was upset and crying but didn't discover the bite until we dressed him for bed. Tina talked to the teacher who told us that Christopher did nothing to instigate the attach and that this particular boy has a real problem with biting. Christopher seems to be doing okay, but he did develop a rash around the bite.

03/29/2000, Wednesday - Just Perfect.
(age: 3 years, 4 months, 9 days)
For some time now, Christopher has used a certain word to describe how he's feeling. If you ask him how he's doing he may say "Just perfect!" However, if he's hurt or not feeling well he'll say "Not perfect." I didn't know where he got these phrases until I met with his pre-school teacher. I asked her how Christopher was doing in school and she replied "He's doing perfect." It sounded just the way Christopher says it.
