02/01/2000, Tuesday - 100's Day
(age: 5 years, 11 months, 14 days)
Nicole Close Up (2/02/2000)
On Monday Nicole celebrated her 100th day of school. They made hats, sang songs and had other activities. It was a really big deal. They did all kinds of things with the number 100. They stamped 100 times on paper, etc. Nicole had to take 100 items to show the class. She chose to take pretzils. Here is their song for the day:

100 Day Song
(sung to "I've Been Working on the Railroad")

We've been working in our classroom, for 100 days.
We've been working in our classroom, here in Kindergarten.
Rising early in the morning,
Bringing our books and crayons too.
Everyday we come to Springridge.
We learn something new.
100's Day is here!
Come on and give a cheer.
100's Day is here. Hooray! Hooray!
100's Day has come.
Come on and join the fun.
100's Day is here! Hooray!

02/03/2000, Thursday - Blessify. Dad's Authority.
(age: 5 years, 11 months, 16 days)
Nicole has a new music tape that she loves. It's a Wee Sing tape featuring kids singing Christian songs. Last night in her bath she began to sing the song "Blessed be the Name of the Lord", but her words were a little different. She sang "Blessify the name. BlesNicole reading to Christopher (2/02/2000)sify the name...." It was pretty cute.

At dinner last night Nicole brought up the idea of doing a "night-time walk". Since it was getting late, she wanted to get flashlights and have some fun in the dark. We told her we couldn't because it was late, bath night, etc. A few minutes later she said, "Maybe the things I plan, I can ask Daddy. Because he is the head of the house."

Today is Nicole's dental appointment. We'll see how her two new teeth are doing. Maybe they'll even find another loose one.

Christopher got a new book yesterday. It's not an easy reader, but Nicole can read enough to tell Christopher the story. I took a picture of them reading. Pretty cute.

02/08/2000, Tuesday - Writing in Cursive.
(age: 5 years, 11 months, 21 days)
Nicole loves to write and is always showing me a new book that she's written, bound beautifully with staples. She loves to color as well and wrote her name on a picture she colored yesterday. That's not unusual until you consider she wrote it in cursive. A babysitter taught her last weekend. Here's a picture.

02/15/2000, Tuesday - Valentine's, Bike, Birthday
(age: 5 years, 11 months, 28 days)
Nicole had her first school Valentine's party yesterday. She brought home a shoe box stuffed with cards and candies. It really turned out to be a fun day.

Nicole's bike broke last week. The pedal mechanizm broke somehow and ball bearings started falling out. These days it's not even worth getting it fixed. Sunday we found a nice bike at Target for $36 assembled. Her old one will be garage sale fodder.

Thursday is Nicole's 6th birthday. Tina has a pony party planned for her. We've rented a large, blow-up bouncer that's shaped like a horse. The kids will have a great time climbing in and jumping around. Other than that, I think it's cake, decorations, presents and party favours. It should be fun.

02/17/2000, Thursday - 6th Birthday, Diary
(age: 6 years)
Today is Nicole's 6th birthday. See the whole story here.

Nicole has started keeping a diary. It's really cute to see what she writes and the pictures she draws. (As yet, she doesn't mind us reading her diary). Here's an entry she wrote (her spelling) this last weekend.

"Der Dire
Me and Dad wint to a
toy stor.
Me and Rachel are going
to a nickel arckade"

(drew pictures of a toy store and an arcade)

02/22/2000, Tuesday - Retelling Stories
(age: 6 years, 5 days)
One activity Nicole is doing in school is to hear a story and then retell the story using words and pictures. Nicole seems to really excel at this. For one story she wrote out about four pages of text and then drew some pictures. It almost looks like she's retelling the whole story word for word. Her teacher does an amazing amount of work as well. She rewrites Nicole's story by hand so that it's easier to read what Nicole wrote. That's a lot of work for 22 students. Perhaps the other kids aren't as verbose.

Nicole continues to write in her diary. For her birthday she got a "Jessie" diary that she loves. It's fun to see what she writes.

02/29/2000, Tuesday - Wee Sing
(age: 6 years, 11 days)
Nicole loves to sing. A few weeks ago Tina found a "Wee Sing" tape that has kids singing a lot of traditional Christian songs. Nicole loves to sing along with the tape in the car. It also comes with a song book. Now that Nicole is reading, she reads along in the book as the songs are sung. When we stop the car, she puts a book mark in, ready to start singing again.
