A Northlands Timeline

History of the Northlands

DateEvent
1237 PdBirth of the Issachar Empire
756 PdBirth of the Ullysian Empire:
The nomadic tribes of north central Cassenland settled down and elected a Caliph from among the ruling houses. Over the next 800 years, the Empire spread out and took control of all of Cassenland.
516 - 507 PdWars of Succession:
When High Emperor Tranter IV died in battle in 517 Pd, his six sons started fighting for the Constantine Throne. Many alliances were formed and broken, and the Issachar Empire was devastated even more. In 510, Tranter's eldest son, Eudorian II, gained control of more than half of the empire, but he was killed by an assassin. In 507, Theodosis I finally subdued the other warring elements and united the empire to face, and defeat, a large orcish invasion from the east. Most scholars think the orcs were forced from their lands by eastern dragons.
10 Pd - 0 FdDragon Wars:
Hundreds of evil dragons answered Wilamyrand's summons and they laid waste to the land. Millions were killed, taken prisoner, or made homeless. Only when Thorien Kyrell and the Twelve Companions discovered the good dragons did the tide of the war begin to turn.
4 PdFall of the Issachar Empire:
The last general to place himself on the Constantine Throne was killed in battle and the Empire fell into chaos.
2 PdReturn of Thorien Kyrell and the Twelve Companions:
Thorien Kyrell had gone to the far east in search of the fabled good dragons. She returned with the first of several waves of them, but she was too late to save the crumbling Issachar Empire.
1 PdExodus of the Elven Nations:
Those elves that survived the first nine years of war had had enough of the constant wars in and around the Issachar Empire, so they made an exodus to some point in the east. Very few people remember much about the elves now, and the few elves that still live in the Northlands are, for the most part, persecuted or exiled.
0 FdBattle of Saarenberg Keep:
The last decisive battle of the Dragon Wars was held in the south of the Old Empire. With the help of the good dragons, Thorien Kyrell defeated the evil dragons and sent them retreating. Hundreds of dragons, both good and evil, and thousands of soldiers were killed in the weeklong battle.
0 - 200 FdAge of Recovery:
During this period, the great empires of Karming and Ullysia arose from the ashes of the Dragon Wars.
200 - 558 FdAge of the Successionist Empires:
Most of the Northlands are under Karmani or Ullysian rule. Frequent skirmishes between the opposing nations were only kept in check by the increasing threat of humanoid attacks from the east.
390 - 394 FdOgre Wars:
Hordes of humanoids descended into northern Karming and the fiefdoms of Cassenddy. After four years of war, they were finally beat back beyond the Crystal Myst Mountains.
558 - 613 FdWar of the Successionist Empires:
Small conflicts between Ullysia and Karming grew into all-out war. After defeating the humanoid armies in the Ogre Wars, Karming had enough strength to carry out a full-scale war against Ullysia. While the two empires clashed, Cassenddy coalesced as a state under the leadership of the Duchy of Koblenz.
610 - 1070 FdBreakup of the Karmani Empire:
In 622, Faldaea, Medinine, Sancerre and Shennendam asserted their independence from Karming. Marblehead started the trend by breaking away in 610, and later, Alamayn, Chalteran, Gran Lausanne, Lauderhill, the Swordslands and Three Rivers became separate nations.
721 - 734 Fd Mebraam's Reign of Terror:
The evil wizard Mebraam took control of Abbysinia by assassinating each ruling lord. He savaged the land and took slaves at will. Only the combined armies of the Swordlands and Cassenddy could to displace him from power.
731 FdGreat Desert War:
Ullysian colonies in southern Cassenland rebelled against their mother country. The Ullysian army was decisively defeated near Karsi, and Ullysia had to deal with an internal rebellion against the war, so it left its former colonies alone.
788 - 796 FdWar of the Light:
The armies of Cassenddy, Karming, and Myrandor (now the Three Rivers Barony) launched an attack on the humanoids in the Crystal Mysts and Borderlands. Caught unprepared, the humanoids were forced back and the forces of good managed to reach the Lenindral Valley before the attack stalled. A large number of humanoids fled to the eastern Dangaards.
838 Fd Formation of the Southern League:
Avallon, the Duchy of Llaren, Seagate, and Watersdowne joined together to fight off the territorial ambitions of their northern neighbor.
874 Fd Barons' Rebellion:
Eight western lords rose in rebellion against the king in Westmarch in a power grab. They had been corrupted by the evil god Marixius. The lords killed King Reynard II and the Dukes of Rylkennen and Cam Delor as they met in council. The Duke Palatine used his own forces to crush the revolt six months after it started.
924 Fd Two Mountains War:
The Margraves of Andalusia rebelled against their mother nation, Cassenddy, and achieved independence.
982, 1047, 1168 FdThree Interventions of the Uhlmanite Church of Tabolport:
Waves of religiously-inspired soldiery followed on the heels of assassins and spies which toppled the governments of southern Cassenland - Watersdowne, West Avallon, and Llaren.
1107 Fd War of the Rangers:
Tensions over banditry, Marblehead logging of the Nabeull Forest, and trade restrictions in both countries boiled over into a small war. Several Marblehead-owned caravans were massacred by Medininian elves who took matters into their own hands. In retaliation, units of the Marblehead army crossed the border and naval units swept past Stormwall after a brief battle and took up positions off Quedlinberg and Arkenstone. After slogging through mud, rain and elven arrows, the Marbleheaders were decisively defeated by regiments under the Count of Carmarthenshire at the battle of Yardleybridge. Medininan ranger units moved through the Nabeull Forest towards the Marblehead side. Longstrand was taken and trade on the Freuhaven-Marblehead highroad was harassed before priests of Ravenien could step in and negotiate a peace. Longstrand was returned to Marblehead and one-third of the Nabeull Forest officially belonged to Marblehead, although Medinine truly retains control of the entire wood with the exception of a few Marblehead woodsmen.
1174 FdDisappearance of the Provost of Alamayn:
A political marriage between the Provost of Alamayn and the daughter of King Karl IV of Cassenddy was prevented by the mysterious disappearance of the Provost.
1176 FdInvasion of Sancerre (a.k.a. The Giant Troubles):
Hill giants and other humanoids erupted from the Lunderhart Mountains and invaded Sancerre, completely taking over the country in two years. The powerful magicians of Shennendam were too disorganized to help their neighbor and only barely beat off the humanoids' attack in the battle of Canaddeara Fords. The giants laid siege to Hysanthas in Zakhar, which was relieved after a month of siege by mages and Army units. Those folk who could escape, followed their Marquis to Shennendam or fled Zakhar, and a large portion of Sancerre's excellent light cavalry fled to the Guillemot Wood.
1178 FdDestruction of the High Temple of Shoded in Tel Hadar:
The major temple devoted to Shoded in the Northlands was destroyed in the center of Tel Hadar by a group that included Archmage Ellom Hankel of Marblehead. The resulting fire killed half of the group, destroyed the eastern side of the city, and probably started the civil war that toppled the government.
1179 - 83 FdDark Wars:
Once again, humanoids swarmed through Lenindral Valley and over the Crystal Mysts into Cassenddy, which had just beat back a massive barbarian foray from the Stykll Isles, and Karming. The vile armies were led by the wizard Witchlord, and were bent on returning to their previously conquered lands. Kammerander and the Marches of Andalusia were taken easily and Three Rivers was almost completely destroyed. The Witchlord's armies laid siege to Cam Malvern and spread waste to the Borderlands and Abbysinia. After a poorly handled and disastrous counterattack, the forces of good regrouped over the winter of 1182. During the next spring and summer, they managed to push the humanoids back over the Crystal Mysts, but the new King of Cassenddy, Morann, suddenly pulled his forces out of the war. The remaining armies were too small to push the humanoids back further.
1184 Fd Disappearance of the Royal Chancellor of Westmarch
1186 Fd Coming of the Prophet to Chalteran:
No one knows who, or what the Prophet really is. He (or she) appeared in Chalteran in 1186 Fd and, over the next several weeks, all of the nobility were killed or disappeared. Faced with such a threat, Duke Werth abdicated and fled to Lauderhill. The Prophet took over the government and has ruled ever since then with an iron fist.
1187 FdNewfest Massacre:
As crowds of people in Karming celebrated this spring festival, a bloody carnage took place within the Karming Citadel. All of the Lords of the Council were mercilessly slaughtered except for Eilery Jeraeme, who was in the northern city of Highmarket. Lord Jeraeme immediately disclaimed any participation and declared himself High Lord of the Marvent.
