Travelling east to AGUILAS, we visited a centre of salad crop production. Millions of lettuces are grown outdoors in the winter season. Then through ALMERIAN Desert, we went down to SAN JOSE-an old fishing village. Permanent population only 260 but a transient population of many thousands.

In south-east Spain there are five areas which have been subject to major desertification in recent times.

The reason is crisis in traditional agriculture associated with the abandonment of land and deterioration of structures such as terraces that protect the soil and conserve water.
