Pam Chai fights out of Toronto but is a product of the underground Asian boxing ring organised by Kwan Shu Wu. She is a ruthless, merciless fighter who comes to the WEBA steeled from bloodsport female boxing in Pattaya, Kowloon and Manila.
To her trainer's amazement, Chai was stymied in her first WEBA fight by the skills of another Toronto-based boxer, Angela Baker. Baker escaped with a split decision in a short fight in which Chai's aggressive style cost her crucial deducted points. Chai and Harry Wu have sworn revenge on Baker's Toronto Scud Stable gym for this humiliating initial loss.
Chai now knows not to toy with WEBA opponents as she could when fighting in Asia (being paid by the round is common in Pattaya's fighting clubs). She showed her power dramatically against Tammy Quinton, dispatching "The Franchise" quickly with a devastating first-round barrage. Her next victim, Washington U. student Miquel Keller, held Chai off until a ferocious assault in the 7th round put the fight out of reach.
Chai had a worthy opponent in California's Brigette Amundson. The early rounds in their first fight resembled Chai's matchup with Baker, and Amundson held her own with good boxing skills. But the late rounds were Chai's as Amundson became deranged after taking an almost-deadly punch! Amundson was beaten bloody but the fight was ruled a draw on the scorecards. The draw set up a grudge rematch, and a publicity coup for Wu as Chai made her Canadian debut in Vancouver. Chai battered Amundson relentlessly for the last half of the fight and left her bloody and unconscious on the canvas midway through the 12th round.
Chai took only 5 rounds to dispose of previously unbeaten Andrea Wagner, handing the Chicagoan with ease. She then entered the WEBA tournament final against two-time championship challenger Heather Corrigan. Chai survived an early knockdown and battled Corrigan to exhaustion in the final rounds before KO'ing her to prevent any mistakes by the fickle WEBA judges. This was Corrigan's first true KO loss as she tasted the power in Chai's fists!
Chai suffered a rare lapse against Diane McFee in a fight for the Canadian championship in Toronto! She started well and knocked McFee down several times but suffered an injury to her ribs in the 7th round and was knocked down twice in the 8th. She fought on gamely despite these setbacks but lost a close decision.
Chai put this behind her quickly with a 6th round KO of rising star Faye Anders, on a card in which Heather Corrigan gained the WEBA championship by defeating Valerie Henning. The stage was set for Chai's first world championship fight!
Chai fought an epic battle with Corrigan for the world championship in Detroit on May 9th, 1997. Both fighters gave everything they had, and both went to the canvas several times. With the champion battered and bleeding, Chai seemed on the verge of the title when she was knocked out in the 13th round in a stunning reversal of fortunes! This was a great fight that showed Chai to be one of the world's best, and set her at 1-1 against the WEBA champion.
The WEBA stands in awe of Chai. Few will challenge her after her two ferocious battles with Corrigan. Only Lisa Boyle was willing to risk Chai's fists in Rome! Boyle made a good fight before being kayoed.
Chai wished to prove herself against the former champions ... Henning and Ling. She battered two-time champion Valerie Henning but lost a close decision. The ring announcers called the fight closer than the judges. Henning was swollen-faced and bleeding at the final bell while Chai was almost unmarked and found it hard to believe that she had not won.
Chai's greatest wish was to fight the other former WEBA champion, Devon Ling, to show this pretender the fearsome way of a true Chinese fighter. But Ling avoided Chai's challenges in favor of weaker opponents!! Denied her wish by the timidity of Ling's management, Chai instead fought promising newcomers. She KO'd Becky Paige , Sandy Jackman and Faye Anders. Then Ling retired after being KO'd by Jackman! When Chai finally met Ling in the ring, Ling was carrying a microphone as an interviewer for the WEBA News! Since then, Ling and Chai have become good friends, sharing many jokes at Kwan Shu Wu's expense!
Chai's proudest moment came when she stripped Diane McFee of the Canadian title by a KO in front of a wildly cheering crowd in Calgary. This avenged Chai's previous upset loss to the Vancouver loudmouth, and established Chai as a favorite of boxing fans across Canada, her adopted country.
Chai was less than spectacular in earning a split decision against Dena DelaCruz, but then went on to destroy Rose Mora and knock out the sturdy Cindy Lee for the unofficial WEBA Asian championship.
The WEBA next decided to offer separate welterweight and lightweight titles, to placate a spoiled Californian fighter who was unhappy about fighting too far above her own weight class. Chai entered the lightweight tournament as its top seed, and faced the brash hard-punching rookie Paris LaSalle. LaSalle gave Chai a fierce fight, but she succumbed to a KO in the ninth round like so many before her. Chai has the most awesome KO record in the WEBA and now faces hated rival Diane McFee once more in the tournament semifinal.
