Dena grew up in the border town of McAllen, Texas. McAllen was not the easiest place to grow up and early in middle school she became involved in a gang called the Tri City Bombers. Problems began to mount as she had run ins with the law and trouble in school. Her life began to turn around when she was caught in a gang fight, and had to go before Judge Ernesto Reyes.

Judge Reyes was a no nonsense judge who would try nearly anything to get the young people who came before him out of trouble. After looking over Dena's history he sentenced her to two years probation and 6 months of boxing lessons to help learn to control her aggression!!!!

No one had heard of such a crazy verdict and at first Dena tried to get out of the sentence. Finally she saw that nothing was going to work and she reluctantly began to go to the gym. What she found when she got there surprised her. Boxing was something she was good at! The discipline she learned through the daily workouts and the tough but fair handling of her trainer Michael Montoya was carrying over into her personal life. Dena began to attend school regularly and she found when she applied herself to this the same way she applied herself to training the results were the same. She graduated from Memorial High (4th in her class) and enrolled at the University of Texas - Pan Am.

Boxing continued to be an important part of her life but turning pro was not in her thoughts until she began to hear about so many women beginning to fight on under cards of major bouts. The urge to find out how far she could make it drove her to join the WEBA.

Now that same discipline and toughness she has learned is driving her to become the best of the best in the WEBA.
