A Brief Introduction to E-Mail Lists

Welcome to cyberspace!

Mail reflectors, usually called "mail lists", take messages sent to them and distribute copies to all list members. The "e-zine" or newsletter type of mail list sends an issue or a memo to your email box, sometimes on a scheduled delivery date. Two-way mail lists, to which members can send their own messages, are similar to a conversation between many people. Some lists have "archives", in which old messages are stored.

Many lists are open for anyone to join. Others are "closed", and joining requires a one-to-one email exchange with a list owner, after which you may be approved for membership.

Each list takes on its own flavor, depending on the personalities involved and the subject(s) under discussion. A long-standing list takes on the characteristics of a community. Some lists are virtual communities!

If you don't feel comfortable with a particular list, look for another that better fits your needs and your conversational style.

If you haven't already, read Netiquette 101 and learn how to avoid those embarrassing social faux pas.

Unschooling-dotcom Unschooling is the confidence to trust that young people will learn what they need from living their lives in freedom and joy. An unschooling parent is a facilitator and cheerleader who embraces life and learning with curiosity and enthusiasm. An unschooled child is free to choose the what, when, where and how of their learning - from mud puddles to Shakespeare to Spongebob Squarepants!

Unschooling is the art of using a child's natural curiosity to guide learning. Join us and learn more about this.

Well Trained Mind The participants on this list discuss the book "The Well-Trained Mind A Guide to Classical Education at Home" by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. This group is open to all homeschoolers who are interested in learning more about classical education methods.

WE Homeschool While the majority of our members are Waldorf-inspired homeschoolers, anyone with an interest in Waldorf Education and/or homeschooling may join. We are an inclusive list and we represent a wide spectrum of faiths, life philosophies, and geographic locations.

CM-Waldorf This list is designed for those interested in the Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling with a Waldorf twist. Topics for discussion will be geared towards combining these two approaches successfully, and any other related issues.

Spirit Led Are you a Christian Home Educater who uses a child-led approach? I have found as an unschooler, I often feel uncomfortable in the local homeschool groups (which are predominantly Christian), but as a Christian, I feel uncomfortable in the unschooling groups (which are predominantly non- (or even anti-) Christian. Each group has it's strengths and each it's weaknesses, but I think we need a forum to share freely our educational philosophies AND our faith.
